Charles Elswood Chaffey

January 22, 1941 - October 15, 2021

Dr. Charles Elswood Chaffey passed away October 15, 2021 at Michael Garron Hospital at the age of 80. He is survived by his loving wife Eunice, his children Anna (David) and Charlotte (Chris), and his grandchildren Emily, Timothy, Benjamin, Philip, Beatrix, and Kees.

Charles was appointed Professor Emeritus in 2006 after a career at the University of Toronto in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Charles was a faithful member of Forward Baptist Church of Toronto. He was an enthusiastic and involved member of the Toronto Field Naturalists, the Bruce Trail Conservancy , Senior Hikers of Toronto, Canadian Scientific & Christian Affiliation, Senior College at the University of Toronto, and Cosburn Park Lawn Bowling Club. He was a valued volunteer with the Herbarium at the Royal Ontario Museum.

A service followed by interment will be held Saturday October 23, 2021 at Pine Hills Cemetery. Due to Covid 19 gathering restrictions, only invited guests will be attending.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

We met Mr. Chaffey at various events with his grandchildren and family. He always had a gentle smile and word of encouragement for all of us. He was such a kind soul. We shared his love of nature and science and were always blessed with this common connection. He will be deeply missed by so many we are sure. Our deepest sympathies to the entire Chaffey family over this next season.

Charles was a very learned scientist, with broad interest in the research of his colleague. He was a true christian in everything he did. His death is a loss to his family, colleagues and to the chemical engineering profession. My sympathy to Eunice and the family
