In memory of

Chang Soo Lee

October 15, 1934 -  March 22, 2021

Chang Soo Lee, husband to Heggie, father to Young, Kyu and Alex, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 22nd, after being diagnosed with lung cancer in January 2021. A graduate of Kyunggi High School, Seoul National University and the University of Waterloo, he had been loving life as a retiree and grandfather to Adrian, Jonathan, Victoria, Kassandra and Christopher. Even at 86 years old, the avid golfer coveted waking up at 5:30am every day, playing a minimum of 9 holes without riding a cart, as long as the golf course was open. Before retirement, he was a chief design engineer for sewer and water works in the Durham Region. He will be loved and missed by many in the Durham Region and in the Korean community in the GTA. He is survived by his wife, sons, daughters-in-law Gemma and Sorim, and his five grandchildren.

Life Stories

Young Lee (Son)

I want you all to know that my father loved his career as a civil servant. Being a Professional Engineer was a high calling for him to do real things to improve people’s lives. He found a professional home in the Region of Durham and that was more than a community of colleagues and friends.

I also want to tell you that my father loved Canada before stepping into Canada. While being a teenage “houseboy” for US Army officers during the Korean War, my father had awed admiration for American wealth, strength, duty and friendship. He got chances to learn English and soak up American culture - listening to music and films shown for the GIs.

So, later he coveted going to the US and could do so as an exchange student. He was basking in the land of capitalist milk and honey that saved South Korea from communist tyranny.

One day, he was on a bus somewhere and he boarded the bus and took a seat at the back where he could see the sights better. He noticed everyone looking at him - Asians not being common in college towns - he thought. A few minutes later the bus stopped and the bus driver walked right at my father. The driver said “You can’t sit here.”
Did I have to pay more?
“Come with me. You sit here”
But why? Did I do something wrong?
“Only Coloreds sit in the back”

In a second, my father realized American wasn’t perfect. Having lived his early years under Japanese authoritarian rule during annexation of Korea, my father had a sense of what is prejudice and what is just.

Ultimately, he chose deliberately to try to live in a country that had the best things of American culture but not the darkest ugly side. Hence, my father arrived in Oshawa to take his first job as a draftsman for the City of Oshawa. After he settled first at a basement apartment, his wife and sons arrived on a cold winter night in 1968. Little did we realize that after we arrived, the Leafs will never win the Stanley Cup again! Please! It has nothing to do with us! 🇨🇦🏒🤦🏻‍♂️
