In memory of

Cathy Cuthbertson

August 1, 1942 -  February 10, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Cathy Ethel Cuthbertson (nee Armstrong), on February 10, 2023. Beloved mother of Jill Persaud (Dean) and Susan Guilbeault (pre-deceased). Special sister of Myrna Ledgley. Lucky grandma to Angela and Alex Guilbeault, and Derek and Jordan Persaud. Great grandmother to Hudson and Jackson Maguire. “Family in Canada” to Marisa, Proclidas and Susana Junco.

After a devastating but mercifully brief illness, we take comfort in knowing our matriarch is now at peace, that she was so well loved by her family and friends, and that her loving and charitable spirit made a difference in the lives of so many over the course of a life so well lived.

Although her girls were her first love, Cathy carved out a remarkable career for herself over the years, attending university as a mature student and single mother to earn her BSW at Laurentian University. She turned her own hearing loss into an impetus to make a difference in the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities and worked at the Canadian Hearing Society in Sudbury for several years before embarking on the next challenge to earn her Masters at Gallaudet University in Washington DC. Upon graduating from Gally in 1990 Cathy moved to Toronto where she worked as a counsellor at CHS for a few years. But she hadn’t yet finished her search for the best way to make a difference! After a hiatus to earn her B.Ed at York University, Cathy embarked on her final career path as a teacher and settled in the Bronte neighbourhood of Oakville. Cathy first taught at EC Drury school for the deaf in Milton, and then as an itinerant teacher for hearing impaired students with Halton board, until she retired at the age of 71.

Even well into retirement and up until Covid changed everything, Cathy remained actively involved with several organizations, including the retired teacher’s group and the Bronte grandmothers group in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. And she loved her volunteer hours at the Friday night dinners at Wellington Square United Church in Burlington!

In lieu of flowers, donations in Cathy’s name can be made to the Stephen Lewis Foundation or the Wellington Square Community Food Programs.

Funeral service for Cathy will be held Friday, February 17th at 1:30 at Pine Hills Cemetary and Funeral Centre. Visitation prior to service from noon to 1:30, and reception to follow.

Cathy was one of the first people I met when i moved to Sudbury. She was so welcoming and warm... introducing me to her beautiful daughters and including me in so many things so I wouldnt feel alone. We would get into these fits of giggles and she would have tears streaming down her face... I can still hear her laughter. While distance kept us apart in recent years, my love, respect and admiration for her never waned. I wish i could have been able to laugh with her one more time. Although I cannot make it to the services, I will be keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers... Cathy, you will always have such a big and special place in my heart. I send you one more big big hug all the way to heaven!!

It is with great sorrow that we learn about the passing of our friend Cathy. Cathy was always generous with her time, furniture and other belongings and shared her love and kindness in caring for others by listening, serving and signing for the Deaf friends in our community. Her kind heart and generous spirit will be missed by many. 💕

Cathy’s giving spirit inspired so many others to care for those in need. She did this while championing and loving her family first and foremost.
It is indeed an honour for Cathy to have welcomed me into her circle of friends.

I knew Cathy at Dufferin-Peel R.C.S.S.B. We were both itinerant teachers and Cathy brought a lot of experience with her to the board. She was a very pleasant and loved teacher and colleague. As most of our students at D-P had Cochlear Implants we were developing programs of full integration. Cathy was able to identify students who needed more support and sign language. It was a pleasure to have her as a colleague.

Cathy and I met when we were raising our children and going through many challenges in Sudbury. It was such a blessing to have a kindred spirit with whom to share life's journey. After Cathy moved to Oakville, I had a lovely visit at her home with her. We also had quite the adventure to travel by Cathy's car to Washington, where she showed me the sights on a memorable trip. I am so glad that I was able to be at a surprise birthday party that Jill and Family planned, and over the years, to be part of showers and weddings for Cathy's beloved children and grandchildren. Cathy and I kept in touch by email and cards. She never ceased to be a dear Friend, and a woman of God who inspired me. Matthew 5:4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. God bless all Cathy's Family and Friends as you celebrate her life.
