We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Caterina Barbieri (neé Gareri) on January 12, 2021 at the Chartwell Trilogy Long Term Care Residence in Scarborough. Caterina was 84 years old or as she always insisted “29 years young”. Beloved wife of Paolo, cherished mother of Palma (John), Josephine (Aucke), Maria (Tom) and Diana (Bill). Truly adored and loved by her grandchildren Alessandra, Natasha (Taran), Rebecca (Avi), Robert, Jessica, Trina, Tommy and Sophia. Predeceased by her sister Maria and brothers Nicola and Francesco, she is lovingly remembered by her sister Nina and brother Pino, and her brothers-in-law Nicola (Maria), Giuseppe (Concetta) and Nando (Nina), and her many nieces and nephews in the GTA, Italy and Argentina.

Caterina was born in Sant’ Onofrio, Calabria, Italy and moved to Toronto with Paolo when they married in 1956 where they built their life together living at their Scarborough home for most of the past 60 years. An expert seamstress and amazing cook with energy in abundance, a hearty laugh and a bright smile, Caterina loved to be surrounded by family and friends. The younger generation of extended family adored her for her encouraging words to reach for what they aspired to as well as her modern fashion sense. Her friends enjoyed her sense of humour and wit and sought her out for her wise advice on many matters. Two years ago, Caterina moved to Trilogy LTC so she could get the care she needed due to the advancing effects of Alzheimer’s. There, she continued to share her fun-filled nature and joviality for living in the moment with the staff and other residents until she succumbed to the complications of Covid-19. We would like to extend our deepest thanks and appreciation to all the staff at Trilogy for their kind-hearted and attentive care of Caterina during the past two years.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, only some immediate family members will be able to attend the memorial service in person. We invite you to join in with the family via the internet to observe the memorial service on January 27, 2021 at 2 pm. The interment of Caterina’s ashes will be scheduled for later in the summer. Caterina was a special part of our life for many of us and will be deeply missed. Family and friends are encouraged to sign the online guestbook and to share their stories, photos and videos using the menu across the top of this memorial page. Caterina aveva 84 anni o come insisteva sempre “giovane di 29 anni”. Amata moglie di Paolo, amata madre di Palma (John), Josephine (Aucke), Maria (Tom) e Diana (Bill). Veramente adorata e amata dai suoi nipoti Alessandra, Natasha (Taran), Rebecca (Avi), Robert, Jessica, Trina, Tommy e Sophia. Predetta dalla sorella Maria e dai fratelli Nicola e Francesco, è affettuosamente ricordata dalla sorella Nina e dal fratello Pino, e dai cognati Nicola (Maria), Giuseppe (Concetta) e Nando (Nina), e dalle sue numerose nipoti e nipoti della GTA, Italia e Argentina.

Esperta sarta e cuoca straordinaria con energia in abbondanza, una risata cordiale e un sorriso luminoso, Caterina amava essere circondata da familiari e amici. La generazione più giovane della famiglia allargata la adorava per le sue parole incoraggianti per raggiungere ciò a cui aspiravano e per il suo senso della moda moderna. I suoi amici apprezzarono il suo senso dell'umorismo e la sua arguzia e la cercarono per i suoi saggi consigli su molte questioni. Due anni fa, Caterina è passata a Trilogy LTC in modo da poter ottenere le cure di cui aveva bisogno a causa degli effetti in aumento dell'Alzheimer. Lì, ha continuato a condividere la sua natura divertente e gioviale per vivere il momento con lo staff e gli altri residenti fino a quando non ha ceduto alle complicazioni del Covid-19.
