In memory of

Bruce Harvey Weppler

March 31, 1928 -  April 7, 2024

Peacefully in his 97th year at Bradford Valley Community Care in Bradford, ON. He is survived by his two children, Kevin Weppler and Joanne Weeks [Paul Laverty], and three grandsons, Christopher Weeks, Daniel and Jonathan Weppler. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of almost 64 years, Winnifred Anne [Wyn] Turner in April 2022.

Bruce was the only child of the late Harvey S Weppler and late Nina C Heimbecker. He was born in Toronto, ON and was a graduate of Etobicoke High School and the University of Toronto. In 1951 he obtained his Bachelor of Commerce degree. He began his accounting career at Price Waterhouse where he obtained his Chartered Accountant [CA] accreditation. He was subsequently employed in a series of private companies in a variety of financial positions in Toronto, ON until 1968 when he joined Drummond McCall Inc in Montreal, QC. The family spent the next 15 years in Beaconsfield, QC where Bruce embraced the experience – he disposed of his Chevrolet Impala convertible, bought a snowblower and learned French. Though never a downhill skier, he bought used equipment at a YMCA swap “because it was a great deal”.

Following the relocation of Drummond McCall’s head office, Bruce and Wyn moved back to Toronto, ON and shortly afterwards, Bruce took early retirement. For five years, Bruce did some consulting and other accounting related activities. In 1989 he jumped at the opportunity to set up the operations for an insurance company in Barbados, before finally retiring for good in 1991.

In retirement, Bruce and Wyn completed many driving vacations across Canada and the USA. They also enjoyed frequent trips to Europe and the Caribbean. Bruce was the original family historian – he was proud of his German-Canadian heritage and delved into genealogy when it required corresponding by mail, sending faxes and visiting libraries to view microfilm or old documents, or churches or cemeteries. A number of our family “vacations” followed this theme. He became the “connective tissue” within his Heimbecker and Weppler families who had dispersed with time. He also helped organized a number of family reunions in Canada in the 1990s. Bruce enjoyed cooking, reading, photography, computers and especially tax season, where he could flex his accounting skills! Bruce was also a long-time member of All Saints Kingsway Anglican Church, Etobicoke, ON.

Bruce was kind to all and was a great conversationalist – though he might get bogged down in the details some times – much to our amusement. He was most proud of his children and the transformation of his grandsons into fine young men. Safe travels Dad! We will miss you.

There will be a private family funeral.

The family sends thanks to the amazing staff at Bradford Valley Community Care for their compassion and care over the past five months. We also wish to thank the wonderful team at Delmanor Prince Edward for their support over the past few years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in our father’s honour can be made to either LOFT Community Services or Dorothy Ley Hospice.
