In memory of

Bok-Soon Kim

May 26, 1933 -  November 30, 2020

Bok-Soon Kim, age 87, passed away due to complications of pneumonia on Monday, November 30th, 2020, at 2:55am at Rouge Valley Centenary Hospital in Scarborough, ON Canada.

She was born on May 26, 1933, and raised in Kaesong city in the southern part of North Korea.

In 1950, at the age of 17, she left North Korea with some friends and fled to the South at the start of the Korean war. It was in Ganggyeong, a municipal city in the province of Chungcheongnam-do where she met her husband, Yong-Geun Kim, and continued to grow their family, until they moved to Seoul in 1957 and then Daejeon.

She immigrated to Canada on Oct 15th, 1972. In Canada, she attended the Toronto Korean Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she was part of a growing Korean community and helped out with various ministries and events. She also worked hard as a line worker in various factories that manufactured things from hair curlers to filling bottles of vehicle fluids. After years of working, she was able to finally buy her first home in Scarborough, ON. She was always known for being a very dedicated and hard worker.

When her husband passed away, she continued to help raise her grandchildren. Bok-Soon truly enjoyed the simple pleasures and was an excellent cook and a cheerful and caring person. Not one to stay idle, she even knitted hats and slippers in her nursing home, helping to raise money, while donating her time and energy so others could stay warm. She is survived by family and children, Hong-Bae Kim, married to Seung-Ja Kim, Yeun-Bae Kim, married to Eunsil Park, Gun- Bae Kim, married to Sung-Hee Kim, Myung-Sook Kim, and Hae-Sook Ying, married to Roy Ying, and other family and friends.

With a heavy heart, I say a few words for my grandmother. Every memory, she was always smiling and laughter always followed. She loved to tell us stories of when we were young and she loved to have family surrounding her. She will be truly missed, but I know that she will be in peace and will always be watching over us with her smile. You will always be in our hearts. RIP grandma, we love you!

Dearest Halmoni,
Ever since you came to Canada, you held me in your arms... and as a child, I was just 3 months old at the time. I love when you tell the story of how you got in so much trouble from my mom, because it was my 100th day party at this park, and it turns out that Queen Elizabeth was doing a tour and would be nearby... So you took me in my stroller to see the Queen... and we did. I saw the Queen of England on my 100th day! You did that... but when we got back, there was hell to pay! 😆No one knew where we were besides the two of us... and I'm so happy to have shared that memory with you, and hear you tell it so many times... I remember going to visit you and halabogi on Sundays, when stores used to be closed, and driving to your condo in Scarborough, all us kids lying in the back of our wood-trimmed station wagon with no seat belts... and as soon as the elevator doors would open, we would see you with your arms wide open, while we tore out of the elevator to see who would get the first hug... I always loved your hugs. 💕You loved feeding us, and was always - ALWAYS smiling. I loved your laugh. Even though we couldn't visit during covid, I'm so glad I got to see your face via facetime, and to talk to you and hear those stories again. I loved bringing you Korean food, and you always wanted to give us cookies and your crocheted hats. We have a lot of your slippers still, and will cherish them... I know they will keep us warm. I hope we brought you some sense of joy in your life, as you did to ours and so many others around you.

We love you. I hope you knew how much.
You will be greatly, greatly missed.
🙏

Love,
your grand-daughter, Tammy,
and great grand-daughters, Rachel, & Taylor
