The Right Reverend Bob Barnabas, a revered husband, father, grandfather, uncle, clergyman, educator, psychologist, military officer, judge, community ambassador, and friend, passed away on July 22, 2024, at the age of 86.
Born on May 13, 1938, in Jakarta, Indonesia, Bishop Barnabas was renowned for his intellectual prowess, dynamism, and dedication to service. His dedication to Kingdom building and free spirited nature left a lasting impact on many. Bishop Barnabas was also known for his kindness and unwavering love for his community, friends, and family.
Bishop Bob Barnabas was a devoted husband to his beloved cherished university girlfriend and wife of 58 years, Elsje (Patricia) Barnabas, and an extraordinary father to their beloved daughter, Beatrice Anne. He was also a proud grandfather to his granddaughter, Karolina Elizabeth. His legacy of love and dedication extended to many more who saw him as a father figure and cherished him.
Bishop Bob Barnabas was a consultant and counselor for 30+ years at non-profit agencies like JVS Toronto and Sheridan College before serving with distinction as a bishop in the Church of Canada, overseeing the provinces of Indonesia and its mission and community in Canada. He also served as the National Chairman for Canada of the Association of International Gospel Assemblies, Philippines, Inc. (Global Network Partnership). He was also a honourary member of the Edwin Allen High School Association of Canada. His illustrious career also included service as a commissioned officer with the Canadian Forces, specifically with the Governor General's Horse Guards Regiment, member of the Indonesian Navy and lecturer at both York University and Seneca College.
Bishop Barnabas also demonstrated his commitment to charitable causes, serving on the council and board of several organisations, including the Microbank of Canada, Chairman of the RCSJ Foundation, and Relief 4 Orphanage Plus, which supports street moms in Indonesia. Additionally, he was an influential member of the senate and the colleges of bishops, and he chaired the Indonesia Mission.
His academic credentials were equally impressive, holding graduate degrees from the University of Toronto and the University of Indonesia, along with an honorary doctorate from Shiloh College. As an Ordained Minister and Consecrated Bishop, Bishop Barnabas's legacy of service, leadership, and dedication to both his faith and his community will be remembered with deep admiration.
Bishop Bob Barnabas was a certified martial arts instructor in 4 disciplines and judge, and served as chaplain of the Military Academy of Canada. As a lay pastor of the International Full Gospel Fellowship (IFGF Toronto), he provided spiritual guidance to his congregation. He was also an active member of the Office of the Chaplain General, Royal Canadian Legion, the Indonesian Diaspora Council, and the Governor General's Horse Guards Association.
His humanitarian efforts extended globally, offering support to new Canadians, refugees and those in need both within and outside of Canada. Bishop Barnabas had a zest for life and laughter, loved flowers and seaside views, and unmatched passion for food. His infectious spirit of love and care touched everyone who knew him.
Bishop Barnabas's legacy of love, kindness, and community service will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. He will be deeply missed, but forever remembered. His sudden departure is a profound loss felt by his family and loved ones around the world.
