Surrounded by the love of family, Bill (Vasilios) Stamatakos passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025. He will be lovingly remembered by Helen, his wife of over 62 years, their children George and Sonia (Michael), grandchildren Eleni, William and Katerina, sister Anastasia (late Georgios), and extended family.
Bill’s upbringing instilled in him confidence, a strong work ethic, and an unwavering commitment to family. The eldest son of Georgios and Sofia, Bill enjoyed a happy childhood growing up close to extended family and friends in a small farming community in the foothills of the Taygetus mountain near Sparta, Greece. Bill excelled academically, with notable interests in history, literature, and philosophy. In 1956, Bill immigrated alone to Canada in search of opportunity. He travelled with two suitcases in hand, one filled with books. Upon arrival in Toronto, he became active in the local Greek community, helping organize social and fundraising events. Hardworking and determined, Bill also assumed positions of increasing responsibility in the hospitality industry, eventually establishing a successful business of over 40 years.
Bill will be remembered for his devotion to family, outgoing nature, and appreciation of his Greek heritage. Together with his wife Helen, they raised their children in a loving home and cherished time spent with their grandchildren. Bill was proud of his family and sought to provide them with sage guidance and opportunity. He greatly enjoyed getting together with family and friends, engaging in lively conversation on a wide range of topics, and sharing his wit and knowledge. Bill also enjoyed music, cheering on his favourite athletes and teams, and dancing. He was proficient in a range of dance styles, as evidenced by his winning performance in dance competitions in his 20s. Bill was also proud of his Greek heritage, often citing the wisdom of Greek philosophers and returning with his wife to vacation in their home in Greece.
While they miss him greatly, Bill's family and friends will always cherish their memories of him. Bill’s life will be celebrated on Thursday, February 6 with a memorial to be held at a future date.
