In memory of

Bhagwati Devi

October 15, 1930 -  July 29, 2019

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Smt. Bhagwati Devi. Born in 1929 in New Delhi, India, she died at the age of 89 in Scarborough, Canada. She is survived by her three children Anguri, Shiv, Santosh and and grandchildren; Manisha, Ronish, Tanya, Usha, Suman, Bittu and Guriya. Smt. Bhagwati was also fortunate to be a great grandmother of 9 and great, great grandmother of 3.

Smt. Bhagwati's life was tested by hardship early in life when she was widowed at the tender age of 23. She was faced with the enormous responsibility of raising her step-daughter of marriageable age, her 5 year old son and 8 month old daughter. Steely and determined she did not let adversity get the better of her, through sheer determination she carved out a life for her family and dedicated her life to their well being. Her departed husband, the late Shri Tulsi Ram Guptaji's younger brother the late Shri Paras Ram Guptaji and her own brother the late Shri Niranjanlal Guptaji were instrumental in helping her through her darkest days.

She eventually moved to Canada in 1972 and remained devoted to her family caring fondly for her grandchildren. Smt. Bhagwati loved to talk and connect with people, be it through her frequent excursions to Niagara Falls with her seniors club or the neighbour down the street. She was also dedicated to her Hindu faith. She started her day at 5AM with prayers daily and as long as her health allowed she cherished her good friends at the Jai Durga Hindu Society mandir.

We invite you to join her family for Vedic chants and remembrances of her life on Friday August 2nd from 1-3PM at the Elgin Mills Funeral and Crematorium with cremation to follow.

I remember Amma when my sister got married in 1976, her affectionate smiled was so warm that I instantly became her big fan. When I came to Canada in 1984 and lived with them, she was always concerned about if I have eaten food. She loved kids and was so loving towards all her three grandkids, Manisha, Ronish and Tanya. She lived a very happy and healthy life and was a very strong women. I hope wherever she is now she can look at her family and be so proud of them. Rest in Peace Amma.

Respected Amma Ji was a pleasing personality. Luckily we met her three years ago. Her adept ability was excellent. She was quite independent and satisfied person. She was affectionate and full of love. With profound grief we wish that her soul May rest in peace.

Now I shiver daily because phone has stopped ringing and 45 minutes commencement of chat is no more possible between Amma and me. Complaints, suggestions, arguments and counter-arguments were regular features of our daily chat. Needless to say I would miss those discussions and my Amma’s voice till the end of journey of my life.
