In memory of

Betty Low

July 18, 1934 -  January 29, 2025

Betty Low (née Wong) July 18, 1934 – January 29, 2025

Betty Low, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, at age 90, passed away peacefully January 29th, 2025 at Toronto Western Hospital with her son by her side.

Born on July 18, 1934, in Quangdong, China, Betty was the daughter of Yuen Kau Fung and and father (unknown who went to war and never returned). She was predeceased by her brother Wong Chi Chiu and sister (Unknown).

At 16 years of age, Betty made a courageous journey from China to England as a “mail order bride,” finding herself in an entirely new world. Despite the immense challenges she faced, Betty and her husband, Arthur, who shared 74 loving years together, worked tirelessly together to open a successful and well-established Fish and Chip shop in Liverpool, England. Betty worked hard and put countless hours into the business which grew nicely in Liverpool; it wasn’t unusual to see customers travelling across the city of Liverpool to sample their fish and chips. Betty Low’s fish and chips developed a great reputation for quality fish and chips.

In 1969, Betty and Art decided to take a leap of faith and emigrated to Canada which afforded their only son Michael the opportunity to make strides in his education and eventually his career. Once in Toronto, Betty first worked at Ashton Potter Ltd., a printing company. She later tried to open a business in Scarborough, but after it didn’t succeed, she returned to the printing company, where she received much love and appreciation for her strong work ethic. Betty even appeared in a TVO documentary on stamp printing.

Betty was a devoted wife to Arthur, loving mother to Michael (Mary) Low, and proud grandmother to Edric, Darian, and Maya, and great-grandmother to Jaiden. She was particularly passionate about watching her granddaughter Maya compete in gymnastics, always asking when Maya would be on TV competing in the Olympics. Betty continued to be a steadfast supporter as Maya pursued her career in Acrobatics and Tumbling, offering her unwavering love and encouragement every step of the way.

Betty’s love for her family knew no bounds, and she always put others’ needs before her own. She was a kind and generous soul, who made friends wherever she went—at work, with neighbors, in her retirement home, and throughout her entire life.

Betty had many passions, including being an avid world championship tennis fan who loved sharing her passion for watching tennis with her son, husband, and grandchildren (Edric and Darian). A forever fan of Djocavic. Betty also enjoyed playing blackjack, which she had remarkable success at many casinos including Bally’s, Paris, Niagara, Rama, and the HardRock Casino. She shared this passion and her skill at blackjack with her surviving grandchildren (Edric, Darian, and Maya).

One of the most humorous moments of Betty’s life occurred while she and Arthur were having dinner in Sarasota, Florida. A stranger approached them, saying they reminded him of his late parents, and insisted on paying for their meal. Initially skeptical, Betty eventually accepted the gesture, and the stranger covered their dinner.

Betty being a native to China was a food connoisseur up until her final days; particularly to Chinese food which she couldn’t live without and always found a reason for an outing with her family to get dim sum.

In her final moments with her son by her bedside, Betty expressed deep concern for her family, particularly her husband Art, asking her son Michael, "Who will look after your Dad?" This simple, heartfelt question was a testament to Betty’s lifelong devotion to those she loved.

Betty is survived by her husband, Arthur; her son, Michael (Mary); her grandchildren, Edric, Darian, and Maya; her great-grandson, Jaiden; and many other family members and friends who will miss her dearly.

The funeral for Betty Low will be held on Saturday, February 15th, 2025 at Pine Hills Funeral Home, 625 Birchmount Rd., Scarborough. Visitation will be from 10:00 - 11:00 AM, followed by the funeral service from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM, with internment following the service.

A Celebration of Life will follow from 3:00 - 5:00 PM at The Stone Cottage Pub, 3750 Kingston Road, Scarborough (east of Scarborough Golf Club Road, on the north side). Hors d'oeuvres and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) will be served.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made “In memory of Betty Low” to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation at https://supportthepmcf.ca/ui/BettyLow/donations/start, or to a charity of your choice.

Thank you for your love and support during this difficult time.

I always remember Auntie Betty as having the sweetest smile on her face all the time. The memory of seeing her on TV was always a highlight and something I thought was the coolest things ever!

Sending much love and deepest condolences to Uncle Arthur, Michael and all of the grandkids.

Mom, I am totally lost for words, my heart is so heavy now that you have left us. You meant everything to me, you were always there to help me and encourage me to do better and I always strived to make you feel proud of me. I'm happy that we spent some quality time together this winter and shared some fun times together in Florida. It was so much fun to see your surprise when your grandson Edric and his family showed up unexpectedly (but planned) at the restaurant. We wanted to surprise you you knowing how much you love your grandchildren and great grandchildren. We did so many things this winter and I was looking forward to doing more things with you this summer. Dad is not doing so well after losing you but I will take care of him and help him through this. We miss you so much Mom, your spirit will always be with us and in our hearts. Rest in peace Mom, we will love you forever.
