In memory of

Bastiaan Douwe Heemsbergen

June 6, 2018

Dr. Bastiaan Heemsbergen went quietly into the night on June 6, 2018. Bastiaan was a husband, father, grandfather, uncle and very good friend to many.

Bastiaan was the loving husband to Myra Cridland.  Beloved father to son Luke Heemsbergen, daughter in law Jessica Walker, and two beautiful grandchildren, Wyatt and Sebastian.  Proud brother of Adriaan Heemsbergen and uncle of Simon Pelland and Matthew Kozma.  He was predeceased by his parents Ryk and Tina Heemsbergen, and sister Anne.

Bastiaan was born in Johannesburg South Africa and immigrated to Canada as a young boy. He earned his PhD in psychology at the university of Edmonton.  He had the privilege of living in many different cities across Canada.  He worked for several years with the Alberta government in the ministry of education, was an independent educator and facilitator with global clients specializing in leadership and innovation, and was faculty at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity for 20 years.

Bastiaan embraced each and every day of his life head on - being fully present in his circumstances.  He was a Renaissance man whose curious mind, deep soul, and giant heart made him a truly special human being. He was as at home on his motorcycle, as he was playing a pipe organ and piano, as he was discussing cognitive science, as he was at Oilers games, as he was at gala fundraising events, as he was at cooking magnificent meals, as he was focussed and grounded to the centre of his universe - his wife.

The impact Bastiaan made in this world each and every day will be sorely missed by many. He sought to make a significant difference in the lives of those around him and all who met Bastiaan even once, understand how this beautiful human bettered us all.

Myra, my deepest sympathies to you and Luke. As you know, Bastiaan was one of my favourite professors in the Dal program. He even let me wear his clogs at the class of 99 event while we were all at the IFL! He had tons of stories that demonstrated the points he was making in the HR program and clearly he knew his stuff. Bastiaan made an impact on me early in the program and It was my pleasure to have know him.
