In memory of

Barrett (Bart) McDonald

September 4, 1938 -  March 25, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, father, grampa (opa), brother, uncle, and friend. He leaves his wife Joan, the love of his life; cherished children David (Lea), Karine and Lisa; adored grandchildren Hannah, Eli and Marley; and many dear nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Joan and brothers Brian and Jim.

Barrett was born in Winnipeg in 1938 to Margaret Einarson and Alec McDonald and was proud of his Icelandic and Scottish heritage. He had a happy childhood in a close and loving family and developed strong friendships that lasted a lifetime. A football player in his youth, he enjoyed many sports and golfed for 38 years at the Bayview Club.

He was a born entrepreneur and fulfilled his goals in the business world by starting his own insurance brokerage at age 29 and continued to develop and add new companies and innovative ideas. In 1990, with an FCIP designation, he was elected an underwriting member of Lloyd’s of London.

His dream was to get a pilot license and his own plane. He aced his IFR license at 42 and flew around North America, to Iceland and Europe in his Cessna 414.

Bart loved his family above all, and we treasured him and all the great memories we made at our Muldrew Lake cottage for 53 years. He was known for his sense of humour and loved a party with good friends. A warm, steadfast, and generous man, he was always accepting and kind.

We were lucky to have him in our lives and will miss him every day.

A celebration of Bart’s life will take place on Saturday, April 26th at 11am at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre – 375 Mount Pleasant Road. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Palliative Care Unit at Sunnybrook, or Kohai Life would be appreciated.

A live broadcast of the celebration of life will be available at roughly 10:45am on April 26. The link will appear near the top of this page. If the link is not appearing, please refresh the page.

Our sincere condolences Joan, David, Karina and Lisa. It goes without saying we've lost a magnificent man. Please know Bart has made a material impact on our entire family. He helped shape our 2 boys and helped make them the young men they are today. Connor often referred to Bart as his best friend. Our lives will never be the same without Bart but I'm comforted to know Bart's legacy, morals and values lives on within all of you and his grand children.

Hearts broken,
Lesley, Kevin, Connor and Paul

I met Bart after becoming friends with Joan about 30 years ago. We all became friends - Bart, Joan, myself, my sons Ashley and Darcy. Many wonderful times at the cottage. Bart and Darcy enjoyed golf and the driving range. After moving to B.C. we still saw them when they came to Victoria and the Sylvia in Vancouver or on visits to Toronto.

Bart was a wonderful, funny and generous soul.

He is so missed already.

Bart, you are one of the few reasons I am who I am today. So many memories that were just the best. He took me flying, we played golf, he help me fish when I was a kid, we went out for lunch on father's day. He was always a rock in my life. There was still so many things I wanted to do with Bart.

For a long time i have understood how much Bart has helped me in life and I wanted to do more to show him it was worth it. That the time and love he gave me really made a difference. I was lucky that I was able to tell him exactly how I felt and what he did for me. And I was really happy that I got to show him what kind of person he helped me become, I just wanted more time.

Just like Bart was there for me I'll be there for you, Joan if you ever need anything, I'll be there. It doesn't matter where I am in the world. If you need me I'll find a way to help.

I am honoured to have known Barrett through the Insuance Industry since the 90's and to represent his brokerage companies with Lloyd's of London over 20 years. He was not only a very astute business man but became a true friend.
My wife joins me in heartfelt condolences to you Joan and your family, may your happy memories give you peace and comfort during this challenging time.
My kindest regards
Graham Pearce
