In memory of

Barbara Ruth Kell

October 12, 1943 -  June 27, 2021

Family are sad to announce that Barbara Kell of Mississauga, Ontario and Calgary, Alberta passed away at the Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga. She had recently been diagnosed with a type of lymphoma for which she had begun treatment.

Barbara grew up in Calgary and obtained her B Sc and B Ed degrees from the University of Calgary. For several years, she taught high school in Peace River, then Okotoks and Cochrane. It was during these latter teaching years that Barbara took computer programming courses at SAIT. With this new training, she obtained a job at Petro Canada in Calgary and also taught evening computer courses at SAIT. From there she began working for Oracle out of Mississauga where she remained until her retirement. For many years Barbara enjoyed hiking and was a member of the Rocky Mountain Ramblers and, in retirement, she liked to split her time between Mississauga and Calgary where she could hike in both Algonquin and the Rocky Mountain parks. She had recently taken up photography and enjoyed capturing images of birds.

Barbara was pre-deceased by her father Lancelot Kell (1914 – 1944) and her mother Grace (Coverley) Kell (1917 – 2015). She is survived by cousin Margaret Ballantyne, Margaret’s daughter and two granddaughters; and cousin David (June) Ballantyne and their three sons. More distant cousins and many friends also mourn her loss.

The family thanks Barbara’s long-time friends Virginia and Ted in Mississauga and Kay in Calgary for their support and assistance during the past several days.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations of remembrance may be made to The Nature Conservancy of Canada, Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Calgary Zoological Society.

I'm sorry to hear that Barbara has passed away. It is particularly sad that this seemed to come so suddenly. Barbara would often be at larger family dinners sharing stories and a good laugh. I think I will remember those times most, little bits of interesting and thoughtful conversation passed around the dinner table along with the scallop potatoes and turkey.

I got to know Barbara through the Mississauga Camera Club. She was always helping with our competitions and was involved with ensuring members competition scores were recorded correctly. She was a gentle and giving lady that will be missed by the club.
