In memory of

Barbara Irene Pearson

March 24, 1936 -  June 20, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Barbara Irene Pearson (nee Rynders) announce her passing, peacefully and surrounded by love, on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at the age of 85.

Barb will be lovingly remembered by her husband of almost 60 years, Kenneth; her daughters Lesli (James) and Lara (Derek); her son-in-law Dean; her nine grandchildren Lauren, Breanne, Jacob, Tyler, Olivia, Cameron, Samantha, Trace and Jameson; her brother George (Claire); her sister-in-law Dianne; her aunts Dorothy and Joyce; her niece Nicole (Paul) and nephews Craig (Lori), Steven and Scott and countless other family and friends. Barb cherished her lifelong friendship with Dianne Murdoch and loved Dianne’s children Jennifer and Gillian and their families.

Barb was predeceased by her much loved daughter Tracey and her parents Margaret and Barend Rynders.

Barb faced her illness with unbelievable strength and clarity. She acknowledged that she had lived an awesome life, relishing in her years living in Australia and British Columbia and travelling extensively with Ken. She cherished winters in Myrtle Beach and Florida, often joined by children and grandchildren. She loved more than 40 summers with family and friends at the cottage on Fletcher Lake … reading on the dock, the annual pancake toss, pizza-making competitions and countless card games. Nothing gave her greater pleasure than the adventures of her children and grandchildren, enjoying countless hours at hockey, baseball, basketball, football and soccer games, celebrating their successes and laughing at their exploits. She enjoyed her special group of friends, The Farm Gang … although she never really recovered when her butter tart championship was challenged and revoked.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations in Barb’s name may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society at cancer.ca.

Dear Family,

My love and sympathy is with you all during this very sad time. I will miss Auntie Barb's laughter, joy and immutable positive outlook on life - she has always been an amazing inspiration.
One of my earliest memories is watching her and my mom play tennis. Auntie Barb's hair was shoulder length and stunningly blonde and she wore a colourful scarf around her head. I thought she was the most beautiful lady ever! Auntie Barb continued to be one of the most beautiful people I know.
All of the memories we have - the cottage, the 'farm', the 'Farm Gang', Santa Claus Parade, coming to your home on Christmas Eve (and me being thrilled by the idea of the Santa bell; a tradition I took to my kids and now Courtenay uses it with her kids), Boxing Day brunch (Auntie Barb gave me her meatball recipe that I wrote down and still use today). Too many wonderful memories as a child to list. As I grew to an adult and had a family of my own, Auntie Barb and Uncle King, became equally as loved by my children.
The great times, great memories and love Auntie Barb freely gave will always be such a gift to me and everyone.
One last thing... she gave me a Sunbeam mixer for a shower gift almost 38 years ago and I still use it today. Every time I bring it out, whoever is in the kitchen chimes along with me...'Auntie Barb gave that to me'...lol - always in our hearts :)

Love,
Jennifer

MEMORIES of BARB & KEN PEARSON from 1968 to 2021
By TONI & DAVID FIELD

We have known Ken and Barb since 1968 when we met here in Sydney when both David and Ken were working at McGraw Hill Australia at North Sydney. It was at their home in Shinfield Ave. St. Ives that we met first Lesli and Tracey and soon Lara was born here in Sydney.
In 1970 two years after had we formed this friendship, David and I travelled to Toronto after hearing so much about Canada from Barb and Ken. We arrived in February 1970 and were greeted by Diane and Robin Noxon who took us under their wing and David started working for McGraw Hill Canada and I started teaching at Silverthorn PS down near Keel Ave. for the York Board Of Education.
No sooner had we settled in Toronto when Ken and Barb returned with their 3 daughters. They lived with Ken’s mum where Lara now lives. Many good memories and some sad ones when Ken’s father died.
In March that year it was discovered that David had bone cancer in his left leg and he spent 10 days in East General Hospital having the tumour removed and then a bone graft. In September the same year David’s bone cancer returned and his leg was amputated. During this time Ken and Barb were our saviours. I often had a cry on their shoulders after visiting David in the hospital.
In early 1971 Ken and Barb left for Vancouver and McGraw Hill Canada transferred David to Vancouver so we together again. They moved with their three girls into a brand new house in Ladner and Ken began working for UBC Press in the grounds of UBC. Toni commenced teaching at ICS Primary School on West 28th & Dunbar Vancouver.
Lesli, Tracey and Lara were like our own children. They often stayed with us in our apartment at Cedar Brook Village in North Vancouver and we loved them dearly. We have so many lovely memories of sharing Christmas and other special times with ‘the Pearson’s at Ladner’.
In 1973 Barb and Ken then returned to Toronto and we then followed them back to Toronto as well. By this time Toni was pregnant and she resumed her teaching with the York Board of Education at Weston Memorial PS. Rebecca our first child was born in St Michaels Toronto on the 18th of August 1973. We remember so vividly Lesli, Traci and Lara bemoaning the fact that we had had a baby, as they felt they were our also children and we were their surrogate parents ! No congratulations there!
In October David was offered a job by McGraw Hill in Singapore and in November we left Canada for Sydney for a quick visit to introduce Rebecca to her grandparents and then to Singapore. After a year in Singapore we settled back in Sydney and had two more daughters. As Ken said ‘you didn’t have to copy us that much !’

2.

Over the next 20 years we often visited Toronto on the way back or going to Europe and Ken and Barb visited here when I turned 60 some 13 years ago. Barb was hilarious, her luggage was lost and she just kept believing the bag would turn up so she wouldn’t buy any new clothes and wore the same items for 2 weeks!! Barb’s luggage was never found !
Tracey and her husband Dean visited Sydney in 1990 and it was so great showing them around. How sad we were when we learnt of Tracey’s illness. David was in LA on a business trip and he received a message that Tracey was in hospital and as he was in LA could he fly to Toronto urgently. On Friday that week David flew to Toronto to see Tracey in hospital and fortunately saw her on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. Tracey had to have a shunt put in her skull that afternoon and David had to leave the hospital to catch the return flight to LA before she returned from the operating theatre. While in the Air Canada departure lounge at Malton Airport he heard his name called for an urgent telephone call, it was Ken calling to tell him that Tracey wished to say goodbye. It was a very very sad time
Enough history and rambling, what we really want to say is that Barb was a wonderful caring wife, mum and grandmother and a super wonderful lifetime friend.
The friendship that started here in Sydney in 1968 then moved to Toronto in 1970 and moved again to Vancouver in 1971 and then back to Toronto in 1973 and then over the seas with us coming to Toronto and the Ken and Barb flying to Sydney never waned and we could pick up the phone anytime and have a good chat.
In 1997 our ‘Canadian born’ daughter Rebecca took a holiday in Europe and flew back to Sydney via Canada and stayed with Ken and Barb and met the Pearson girls.
We even met Ken and Barb in Vancouver when we all spent a 10 day cruise to Alaska and a few years later a River Cruise in Europe.
How we wish we could have said our goodbyes face to face. But a zoom meeting recently organised by Brianne that enabled us to see and talk to Barb and Ken at home just days before she died.
We so appreciated your effort with this Breanne. Thank you so much for organising the zoom call.
