Athina was proud of her memories. We poured over her photographs of her past constantly and she told me what seemed to be hilarious stories all in Greek. She smiled at every photo and reminisced about her life in Greece and her travels to Canada. She spoke beautifully of her memories making clothes and cooking for her sons and her very handsome husband. She had a wonderful life.

Athina was a very timid, demanding personality mixed with unintentional funny moments. She she enjoyed being pampered, she was very specific about her Greek TV programs and the foods she liked to eat. She was very observant and often fell victim to our funny pranks when we switched her TV program remotely to which she’d exclaim “My God, what happen?” She often spoke about her beautiful husband and was very happy to share her Greek culture

Athina Efthimiopoulos was a strong and independent woman, ever since I met her 5 years ago, she was always up and about on her own in her high heels at 87 years old doing her daily commute of bathroom, tv, kitchen then bed. Athina did not always have the most pleasant life growing up as she would often speak about her experiences in Greece during the war, I would not always understand her but I could see that there was pain in her eyes and I listened to her all the same.
In her later years living with us, she had started to slowly lose that independence which we knew must have been very difficult for her, she had to start visiting the doctors more and had to change her appetite so that she could be healthier in her older age much to her displeasure because that meant cream cheese was off the menu for good. She started walking with a cane, then a walker then not at all..
When covid hit, I had taken it upon myself to keep at arm’s length to ensure that she would not contract anything from me since I had to be out of the house regularly for work but each time I would visit her I would see the loneliness in her eyes grow as she felt trapped in her room unable to interact unless someone had visited her.
She had unfortunately fallen one day trying to unlock the latches on her wheelchair so she could take a stroll along the corridor though she was told not to, but I am sure she missed the freedom of being an adult, fortunately I was home and heard her cry. I rushed to her aid and picked her up gently and nursed her for the rest of the morning until the family returned, she was overjoyed with the care I had given her and spoke at great lengths about the experience to everyone wearing her bruise proudly.
I am happy to have been able to make this great woman smile even once, she will be missed.
