Athena Prattas
June 6, 1934 -
May 23, 2023
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Mrs. Athena Prattas. Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, she passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.
Athena was born on June 6, 1934 in Skoura, Greece. It was there in that small village town on the outskirts of Sparta that she met the love of her life, her husband Stelio (Steve). She followed her heart and they eloped one day after her eighteenth birthday. After seventy years of marriage he will miss her beyond measure.
Athena possessed an incredible steadfastness of character and heart. A strength that as a young woman saw her sail across the ocean towards a better life in Canada. Early years of having very little taught her to see the value in everything, especially learning as many skills as she could. Her inquisitiveness and keen intellect drove her to excel in many pursuits, from crochet and sewing to cooking and homemaking. A career in the hectic restaurant business was a bustling prelude to a marvelous retirement spent travelling, doting on her family and indulging in her passion of jigsaw puzzles. For most of her life she called Toronto home, but she frequently traveled back to Greece to enjoy time there, and also took numerous road trips to the United States to visit with family.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Loukritia (Elia) Vlahakis and Jack (Angela) Prattas, whom she cherished with her whole heart. Always thinking of others before herself, she adored her family above all things. An immensely proud grandmother of four grandchildren she leaves behind Dean, Elena, Stylianos and Athena. Her loss will be felt by family members and friends across Canada, Greece and the United States. She is now rejoined with her loving parents, Theodore Stamatakos and Stamata Stamatakos (Nee Athanasoulias). Athena, the youngest of three siblings, was pre-deceased by her beloved sister, Eleni Skoutakis, and her brother, Stavros Stamatakos.
Athena will be remembered for her deeply caring spirit. She was selfless, loyal and kind.
She possessed a wealth of knowledge gained through her exceptional life experiences, which she shared freely, and was always quick to offer a helping hand. Highly regarded for her generous heart with which she loved all her friends and family, she will be dearly missed.
Visitation and Funeral Service to take place at Elgin Mills Cemetery on Monday, May 29, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with an interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sunnybrook Hospital and/or Western General Hospital.
