In memory of

Archibald Kay

July 23, 1927 -  August 9, 2017

On August 9, 2017, Archibald (Archie) Hood Kay, 90 years of age, passed away after a short illness. He passed peacefully in his sleep and was in the company of one of his sons, Alan. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Winifred Ann (Winnie), his six children, Helen (Gregor), Iain (Joyce), Alan (Debbie), Jo Ann (Ronnie), Suzann (Terry) and Colin (Kay). He will be missed sorely by his seven grandchildren, Tami (Phillip), Ryan (Katy), Mhairi (Ryan), Aileigh, Jennifer (Matt), Liam (Leah) and Miranda as well as his two great grandchildren, Yohanna and Rivers.

Archie was born in Airdrie, Scotland in 1927. In November 1952, Archie emigrated from Scotland to start a new life in Canada and was followed shortly afterwards by his wife and two young children. Archie worked at different jobs trying to establish himself in Canada, including A.V. Roe during the time of the design and construction of the AVRO Arrow.
He eventually secured employment with CBC as an electrician. He spent the next 35 years with the CBC, a job that he truly loved, before retiring as a Lighting Director.

During his time with the CBC he had the opportunity to work on several different acclaimed shows including The Nature of Things with Dr. David Suzuki, which took him on travels all over the world. Some of the television productions earned awards that were presented to him by the Governor General of Canada and the Queen Mother.

In 1959, Archie settled his family in the new and emerging community of West Rouge. He quickly became involved in the community often being called upon for his skills as an electrician to assist neighbours, local community groups and churches, as well as taking on the role of Scout Master for the local Boy Scouts troop.

Archie and Winnie raised their family and have resided in the same community for 58 years.

Although Archie was proud to have built himself and his family a new life in Canada, he remained fiercely proud of his Scottish heritage. He was an avid reader of the poetry of Robert Burns and often returned home to visit friends and family.

Archie’s presence will be missed by so many.

I was privileged to know Archie for over 40 years. His family and mine lived on the same street and over the years grew to mean a lot to each other. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts, and prayers will be with Winnie and the family during this difficult time.
