In Loving Memory of Anthony Yook Wah Phang

We are deeply saddened to announce the loss of an incredible and courageous man, Anthony Phang, who for the past two years continued to live life to the fullest, even when faced with an incurable form of leukemia. He passed away peacefully on September 9, 2023 at Sunnybrook hospital at the age of 76.

Affectionately known to many as both “Tony” and "Ah Yeh," Anthony was born on October 26th, 1946 in Ipoh, Malaysia and grew up in a large, loving family with 6 siblings. From a young age, he already showed an innate talent for turning even the simplest moments into grand adventures, and his zest for life never stopped.

He was never content with a singular pursuit but instead reveled in the joy of mastering countless hobbies and passions. From badminton, golfing, cycling and snowboarding to ballroom dancing & exploring the world with his wife Annie, from fishing to target shooting, from taking care of his beloved sports cars to riding his prized Harley Davidson across Canada and the US, his energy and enthusiasm knew no bounds.

While Anthony was celebrated for his adventurous spirit, it was his expertise in the culinary business that truly set him apart. With an entrepreneurial vision, he established and managed several innovative and successful restaurants, including the iconic Sushi Time on Queen St. Throughout the course of his expansive career as a restaurateur, Anthony developed and maintained many close friendships with both staff and patrons who will forever have fond memories of great food and laughter that filled his restaurants.

Beyond his culinary and creative talents, Anthony was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and also friend. He cherished every moment spent with his family and friends, infusing each gathering with his unique blend of warmth and generosity, and loved to playfully make fun of everyone.

Anthony is survived by Annie, his wife of 56 happy years, his two children, Carlos and Cass, six grandchildren, and a wide community of family, friends and admirers who will forever treasure the huge mark he left on their lives.

Anthony, you may have closed the doors to your many restaurants, but you have left the world a more vibrant and flavourful place. Your spirit will forever inspire us to explore, create, and savour life's grandest adventures. You will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered, always.

Family and friends will be received Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 12:30 pm, at Elgin Mills Cemetery, Cremation & Funeral Centres.
