In memory of

Anthony Joseph Fernandes

September 19, 1943 -  March 23, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Tony Fernandes, in his eighty-second year, peacefully at Bethell Hospice, Inglewood, on Sunday, March 23, 2025 after a brave and hard-fought battle with cancer. Tony had two immediate families who loved him very much. He leaves behind his loving spouse of 13 years, Barbara Low, and her family. He also leaves behind his former wife of 46 years, Carol Fernandes, his son Stephen Fernandes, Stephen’s wife, Diane and his beloved two grandchildren, Jason Hoon and Clare Faith. He was sadly predeceased by his younger son, Troy Fernandes in 2012. His sister, Donna Gouveia (husband Desmond, deceased in 2023), his two half-sisters, Beena Narwani and Indra Govia and his Four half-brothers, Dilup, Raj and Ramesh Narwani and Robert Fernandes remember him fondly. The further extended family on both sides who will miss him are too many to mention.
Tony was born in Georgetown, Guyana to Monica Narwani and Claude Fernandes. He was raised by his grandmother and also lived part of his childhood in Trinidad. He moved to Montreal, Canada with his family in 1968 for a better life and eventually moved to Ontario in 1979. He was very hard-working and spent the majority of his career with Labatt’s Breweries in Toronto.
Tony was a generous man with a quick smile. He enjoyed spending time with his loved ones and friends. His families have many happy memories of celebrations spent together. Christmas was a favourite time of year when he would spend hours on elaborate displays to delight everyone. He had many interests with Golf being one of his main passions. He spent many a happy hour on the Links and even the cruel disease of dementia could not take that pleasure away from him as he continued to play on his community course well into his later years. He also gave generously of his time as a member of the Knights of Columbus.
We hope he is reunited with his beloved grandmother, mother and son and other family members in heaven, and that he is now at peace, enjoying well-deserved rest and of course, golfing on a beautiful course designed by God himself.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, April 3rd at Meadowvale Funeral home and cemetery at 7732 Mavis Road, Brampton, Ontario. Viewing at 1 pm, service at 2 pm followed by burial and a reception from 3:30 to 5:30 pm at the funeral home on site.
In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donations in Tony’s name to Bethell Hospice, Inglewood, Ontario or to the Canadian Cancer Society.

I’ve known Tony since I was a small child in Guyana.
He was an exciting adult to be around as a child always smiling and fun to be around. He would go fishing with my brother Andrew and often came back with loads of fish on his bicycle.
Aways a kind and generous soul Tony loved to play cards with the others at his mother in laws home. Lots of laughing and strong Guyanese accents around the table.
I think that what ever you asked of him he would do if he could.
He will always be remembered and it was an honor knowing him and being his brother in law.
