In memory of

Anima Sengupta

June 26, 1925 -  April 19, 2025

Anima Sengupta moved to Canada from Kolkata, India in 1968 with daughters Sreela and Smita to join her beloved husband, Hiranya who had come the year before.

Anima was the third child in a family which included 6 sisters and 5 brothers. She is survived by 1 brother, Dipak and 1 sister, Rita and numerous nephews and nieces, and was the matriarch of a large and extended family. Sadly Hiranya passed away in 2009 and as did Owen, Smita’s husband, in 2023.

After arriving in Canada, she attended Centennial College where she earned a diploma which allowed her to work in several daycares before opening a very successful daycare business, which she ran with dedicated and competent staff.

The family is grateful to her recent caregivers: Geraldine, Thelma, Bella, Vicky and Eliza as well as others who had helped before. They provided the best of care and ensured that she received her daily favourite mango drink and cake. The family is also grateful for the guidance provided by the team at Temmy Latner Centre at Mt Sinai.

Ma was firm, strong and loving. She was ahead of her time, a pioneer in many ways and it is said she even taught her husband how to drive.

Ma was very proud of Sreela and Smita and enjoyed hearing about their frequent world travels.

Anima passed away peacefully on April 19th, two months short of her 100th birthday.

She is loved and will be missed.

I was very sad to learn that Ma had passed away. She was a beautiful, wise and extraordinary mum to Sreela and Smita, whom she indulged and adored, while being firm. Anima enjoyed a close relationship with her nieces, nephews as well as her younger brother and extended family. She will be missed by many.
