Angeliki Kontos May 11, 1921 – July 29, 2022
Angeliki was born in Patras, Greece. She was the first child of Alexios and Alexandra, sister of Epaminondas, Yiannis, and Ekaterina. Losing her father as a teenager, she became the breadwinner of the family, taking care of her younger siblings with her mother. Angeliki was a kind, loving and gentle person. She was a dedicated daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was loved by all who knew her.
She married Haralabos Kontos in Patras in 1942. They withstood the Second World War and the ensuing famine in Greece. After her daughter Anna was born, the family moved to Athens. Ever the dedicated caregiver, she supported her husband in his good times and bad times.
She raised and encouraged her daughter to pursue her own career. She allowed Anna, her only child, to leave her and Greece, and move to Edinburgh at a young age for University, after which, Anna and her husband, George, moved to Canada. Angeliki missed her daughter dearly while they were apart.
When she and her husband learned that they were going to become grandparents, they dropped their life in Athens and moved to Toronto. Angeliki and Haralabos were delighted to be reunited with Anna and George. Angeliki loved George very much and despite her protests, enjoyed his teasing nature. As a grandmother, she helped to care for her grandchildren (Aristotle (Stephanie), Daphne (Frank) and Sophocles (Alanna)), coming every day to make them breakfast and walk them to school. She always had a snack ready for them when they came home, feeding them traditional Greek food for dinner and special occasions. She helped to raise her 3 grandchildren and loved them very much. She had a special bond with each one, and spent countless days with them. Together, they visited libraries, playgrounds and museums throughout Toronto, and she could usually be persuaded to stop for a chocolate treat along the way.
Angeliki lived with her husband until he passed, then independently until the age of 92. She was very proud to become a great grandmother at 93. To honour her 100th birthday, her great grand-children took part in a fund raiser, and raised a significant amount of money for the Hellenic Home; her 3 great grandchildren (Artemis, Althaea and Kleio) have been privileged to love and be loved very much by Pro-Yiayia in return.
Angeliki lived a beautiful, long life to the age of 101. Our family is tremendously grateful to the nurses, PSWs and all staff at the Toronto Hellenic Home for the Aged, who cared for Angeliki for the last 8 years of her life. She passed peacefully, with a loved one at her side, the morning of July 29, 2022.
