In memory of
Aneta Alaton
August 18, 1920 -
October 17, 2016
Aneta Alaton Physician, wife, mother, grandmother on October 17 in North York General Hospital following a stroke, surrounded by husband Isak, son Salem and daughter-in-law Edna Sandler. Born Aneta Akşiyote in Istanbul on Aug. 18, 1920, two years after the Armistice that ended the First World War, Ann was the youngest child of a military physician and herself became a physician in Turkey in 1948, a place and time when women could rarely aspire to such a career. With her husband and son she came to Toronto in 1958, redoing her medical internship at Toronto East General Hospital, going on to work as an internist at Women’s College Hospital and then devoting 22 years in oncology at Princess Margaret Hospital. A woman of unstinting kindness, generosity and an indefatigable optimism, someone who could not be induced to make a word of complaint or speak ill of anyone, enormously admired and loved by all who knew her. Ann leaves her husband of nearly 65 years, Isak, with whom she lived independently to the end. She also departs with the love of the grandchildren she adored, Anna-Rae and Gavriel, and with the devotion of her beloved nieces and nephews around the world, Jülyet Benbasat (Izak), Denis Cheniot (Anne), Judy Mizrahi (José), Jacky Akşiyote (Nancy) and Davut Akşiyote. Thanks to the physicians and nurses at North York General for their thoughtful attention during Ann’s last days. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in her name to Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. All friends and former colleagues will be welcome at an informal celebration of life for Ann at the York Funeral Centre, 160 Beecroft Road, North York, (416) 221-3404, on Sunday, Oct. 23 at noon.
