In memory of

Andy Hum

July 13, 1960 -  January 27, 2023

It is with great sadness to share the news of the sudden loss of our beloved Andy Hum on January 27th, 2023. Survived by wife Linda; children Stephen and Ashley; parents Park and Lori; brothers Sonny (Shi Ling), Danny, and Allan (Carolyn); sister-in-law Deborah Graham (Jeffrey); nieces and nephews Sarah, Amanda, Thomas, Aidan, and Nate; father-in-law Wes Mulford.

Andy was born in Toronto, Ontario on July 13th, 1960, the first of his family born to Canada as his parents immigrated from China in the 1950’s. Much of Andy’s upbringing was centred around the family’s business where his parents and brothers worked hard to build a better life. His loyal dedication to the family continued throughout his lifetime, taking care of everyday needs of the businesses.

Andy had many talents. Often refereed to as “Handy Andy,” he had an act for out-of-the-box thinking and problem-solving. If there was ever something in need of fixing, Andy was close by. He was a natural athlete who played many sports including track and field, hockey, skiing, golfing, and tennis. Above all, he a keen eye for film and photography. He graduated from the Media Arts program at Sheridan college in 1984. It was in his last year at Sheridan where Andy met Linda, his wife of 33 years, during one of his famous “Hummer Parties.”

Andy went on to have a career in video production, travelling the globe filming and editing incredible films while working with Science and Medicine Canada. Most notably, in his travels to Canada’s west coast he created a documentary of Northwest Coast Artist Dempsey Bob called “The Smart One,” garnering him a Gold and Silver from the American Film and Video Awards. Of course, these talents also made for a lifetime of documenting the best ever home movies and family memories.

An avid fisherman, Andy loved the lakes and rivers of Ontario, especially at the family cottage on Lake Huron. Many summers were spent with family and friends watching the sunset, listening to music, and catching up on each other’s lives. Andy was a long-time member of the cottage “Abenaki Alumni,” the Gang of 36 years and counting.

Perhaps his greatest achievement and the one that he held closest to his heart was the birth of his twins in 1998, Ashley and Stephen. In the twins’ early years his organization and hands-on nature helped make life easier for him and Linda in a busy household. As the twins grew, he never failed to turn everyday moments or challenges into life lessons that Ash and Steve will carry with them forever.

Having grown up in the restaurant business with the Hums, Andy was always an incredible Chef. Preparing delicious meals was one of the ways he showed his love of his family. Everyday dinners, celebratory steaks, summer barbeques, and holiday feasts will never be the same. We will truly miss him everyday.

A celebration of life will be held at Linda and Andy’s home in Toronto on Saturday, February 11th. All are welcome to stop by anytime between 2:00pm and 5:00pm.
