In memory of

Andrew Michael Tomcik

June 18, 1938 -  May 9, 2023

Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts
York University
1938-2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew Tomcik, a respected and gentle man who had two great loves in life: his family and fine art. Andy was the beloved husband of Donna for 55 years, and cherished father to his children, Anna (Michael) and David (Michino), and step grandpa to Mika (John) and now a step great grandpa to little Esmae.

As a professor of graphic design at York University for over 25 years, Andy mentored his students with sincerity – art was his form of self-expression and was truly his calling. Andy saw the world through an artist’s eye from youth, first graduating from the Cleveland Art Institute and earning a scholarship that allowed him to study and travel through Europe. After completing an MFA from Yale University, Andy successfully launched his graphic design career, then deciding to share his expertise by teaching at Georgia State University, Atlanta, before joining the faculty at York as a dedicated professor, also serving as Chair of Visual Arts and Master of Winters College.

Throughout his life, Andy used graphic and other visual arts to express himself through his works, often using the written word as a source of inspiration for his beautiful creations, including his own poetry. Andy’s religious faith was also instrumental in shaping both his art and his demeanour, and a symbol he designed in the spirit of St. Francis can be seen by all on a flag that flies in front of St. Bonaventure Church.

While Andy was a deep thinker with a serene disposition, his love of music and of dessert revealed his playful side, and he was often most content enjoying a slice of homemade pie or bowl of ice cream while doing the crossword. You could always count on a few puns worked into a conversation with Andy yet never an unkind word about anyone. He saw and respected each person for who they were, which is why he was so loved by his family and esteemed by his peers and students.

A private family funeral is being held, and later a celebration of life and Andy’s art will be announced, so that friends, colleagues and former students can pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to St. Francis Table or St. Clare Inn.
