It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Zobida Janet Rahim on January 12, 2022 at Mackenzie Health Hospital in Richmond Hill at the age of 90 years. Zobida was born in San Juan, Trinidad and the only daughter of Aisha and Sakawat Ali. Zobida grew up in Trinidad surrounded by her loving and protective brothers, Asgar (Biggest), Sahadat (Lillest), Omar (Bedo) and is survived by her younger brother Shair. Zobida was married for 61 years to Sheik Shahanan Rahim who passed away in 2013. Cherished and loving mother of Camellia Placentile (Savino), Noel Rahim (Marilee), Leo Rahim (Linda), Victor Rahim (Theresa), Judy Hillyard (Jim) and Liz Jespersen (Flemming). Zobida is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Milena, Christopher (Andrea), Jennifer (Jesse), Jason (Joanne), Shane, Dusty, Casey, Lisa, Bill (Tara), Christine (Chris), Jim (Trish), Stephanie (Natty) and Michael (Natalya). Zobida will be dearly missed by her great-grandchildren Damian, Max, Lorelai, Zoe, Madelaine, Brett, Jim, Emma, Lauren, Aiden, Mason, Bella and Cameron. Zobida was known as Aunty Czar to her many nieces and nephews who loved her as a mother and appreciated their conversations as they phoned from around the world on a weekly basis.
Zobida and Sheik immigrated from Trinidad in 1966 where they lived and raised their children in Mimico and Willowdale (now Toronto). Zobida’s first job in Canada was working at Simpsons in the Wool Department where she made fast friends with her co-workers who shared a passion for cooking. Zobida was doing fusion cooking long before it became a trend and what an amazing cook she was. Everyone looked forward to going to Mom’s/Grandma’s place for lunch. Zobida was also a long-time and proud employee of Revenue Canada at the Adelaide Street location in Toronto. Zobida even talked about working at “Rev Can” up to her last days.
In memory of Zobida and in lieu of flowers, donations to Diabetes Canada would be appreciated by the family. Special thanks to the staff at Richmond Hill Retirement Residence who treated Janet like a loved family member for the past five years. Also, special thanks to the compassionate nurses at Mackenzie Health’s Palliative Care Unit during Zobida’s final days.
Due to covid restrictions the funeral service will be private.
