In memory of

Zikranouhi "Diko" Shahinian

June 20, 1936 -  March 31, 2023

Mother, wife, homemaker, loyal friend

Born in Jaffa to parents who were both survivors of the Armenian genocide, Diko was one of five children. While far from wealthy, hers was a loving family that enjoyed good food and valued education. From an early age Diko excelled in school, establishing a lifelong interest in history, other people’s life stories and culture. Growing up in a multicultural community, she mastered six languages including French which she continued to read and speak at every opportunity her entire life. A risk taker, she immigrated to Toronto with her beloved husband Elias (predeceased) and built a new life and loving home and family in Canada with their three children, Nanette (John Greenwood), Serge (Susan Gauthier) and Natalie, and grandchildren, Jeremy, Alexander and Chlöe. She leaves behind her siblings Haigo, Alice, Mihran and Koko.

A loving mother and sister figure to many, Diko will be remembered for opening her home and heart, inviting family and friends into her house (and her kitchen!) with a warm welcome and a delicious home-cooked meal. She was sharp, curious and open – building a quick closeness bridging generations and backgrounds with all who came into her life, right up to her last days. Being more home-bound in her later years did not slow her down - an avid reader and puzzle master – she would devour books at a record pace, and kept in regular touch by phone with numerous friends and family. Her hard work, perseverance, loyalty, compassion, friendliness, generosity, and unrelenting support of family and friends will always be remembered.

She touched so many people over so many years – leaving a lasting impression that will be cherished. May she rest in peace.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Diko’s memory be directed to The Toronto Public Library, in care of the Toronto Public Library Foundation: (https://tplfoundation.ca/donate/).

Visitation at 10:00 AM and funeral service at 10:30 AM will be held on Saturday, April 15 at The Holy Trinity Armenian Church, 920 Progress Ave, Scarborough, Ont., followed by a luncheon at the same location.

Natalie, we are so sorry for the loss of your mom. Mrs. S was a wise woman with always lots of good advice to give. She always wished the best for us. I've known her for 30 yrs and remembered my first encounter with her having Dim Sum together. Mrs. S & Natalie took yoga classes at the JCC many yrs ago and at the end of class she heard a lady say, "no mistakes". It was supposed to be "Namaste" - that story still tickles me today! So Namaste Mrs. S, you are in our thougts and prayers. XOXO

I never met you Diko but we looked forward to talking every weekend during Covid. As you know if it wasn't for Covid we would never had talked. During our calls I was going through some major changes including moving on my own for the first time and you always said the right thing. You would always ask hour my children and grandchildren were but you always brought the conversation back to me and how am I. I have a really big family and I found it very strange that someone who really did not know me would be interested in what I was doing even though you did not have to.
Thank you for getting me through my first year on my own, be at peace.

A beautiful tribute to a wonderful soul and person. My deep condolences and love to the whole family. She was always Natalie’s amazing mom to me and I will always remember her loving energy, smile and kindness. I carry her memory in my heart and am here for anything I can do, Natalie and Andrew. Love to both of you.

My brother and I grew up across the street from "Dikie", and I have many memories of her, from her being one of our first (and only) customers when we set up a lemonade stand, to catching her and waving when she would do her daily walks on her driveway. I feel very fortunate to have had a neighbour who cared so much about us through the ups and downs of life, and having heard some of her stories I know she was not a stranger to that as well. Lots of love and appreciation for the life you led, we will miss you dearly.
