Zeng Ni was born to a wealthy family on September 3, 1935, in Beijing. His father, Ruiquan Ni, was a well-known photographer in the Beiing Opera circles. As a young boy he attended many opera performances with his father. His interest in theatre and drama grew after he graduated from the Beijing Teachers College. As a Chinese literature teacher at Beijing’s Number 718 Factory, he taught thousands of young workers who were interested in Chinese prose and poetry writing. He then joined a group of writers and journalists to launch a newspaper, The China Farmers Daily, in the mid-1970s. As a journalist, he traveled extensively to the Chinese countryside to report on agriculture and peasant-farmer issues. Later he was promoted to be the Head of the paper’s editorial and administrative office. He retired in 1993 when emigrated to Toronto with his wife and daughter to join his son. In Toronto’s Chinatown, he continued to teach children Chinese and write articles on arts and Beijing daily life for several Chinese newspapers in Toronto. Ten years ago he was diagnosed with progressive nuclear palsy, a Parkinson-like disease that has proved incurable to date. He spent his final four years at Yeehong Nursing Home till May 6, 2018, when his heart finally stopped at a Toronto hospital. He was a kind and loving father and friend, a man of culture and wisdom. He is survived by Shian Wang, his wife of 57 years of marriage, Peiwei Ni, son, Peilu Ni, daughter and five grandchildren.

1935年9月3日倪增出生在北京一大户人家，小学到高中就读北京孔德学校，和吴祖光等名人是校友。在校期间对戏剧电影产生了浓厚兴趣，经常在学校杂志发表影评。由于其父亲是北京著名的摄影家，经常为梅兰芳等京剧大师拍摄，他从小就跟随父亲在京剧圈子里长大，对京剧从而对音乐和歌剧都有很深的造诣。五十年代末从师范大学毕业之后分配到中国文字改革委员会与周有光等人一起从事汉语改革工作，之后分配在华北无线电工业学院教书，期间与自己的学生王士安相遇并结为连理。文革时期双双被下放到718厂教书，直到文革结束倪增被邀请到中国农民日报社成为报社元老级的编辑。在报社期间一直担任政法部总编及办公室主任。作为总编，他经常到地委及县委做新闻调查，受到各地政府的最高待遇。作为办公室主任，为众多初来乍到的记者们提供全方位照顾，从而得到了很高的威望，在1993年移民加拿大时很多人留宿报社为了第二天一大早能为老领导送行。移民加拿大之后，倪增继续对中国文字艺术进行传播，不仅开设中文学校教授中文，还在星岛日报，明报等报纸杂志撰写文章，从而在星岛日报得到了自己的专栏，继续对中国文字文学进行探讨研究。
