A Gentle Soul

Yee Wan Law CHONG, known as Yvonne to her friends, passed away peacefully in the way she had always wished and prayed for. Yvonne had just finished a delicious salmon belly dinner and was watching tv on her favourite sofa before her heart failed. She was not in pain, and she left us in peace.

Yvonne is terribly missed by her closest family. How can we not miss her? She was so patient, kind, and loved her family dearly. She was very wise with foresight, always content with neither complaint nor criticism. She was pleasant, caring, and understanding. She was a sweet and selfless soul, who always put others first before herself. She was a light-hearted person whose laughter brought us sunshine. Her attentive listening and compassion comforted us.

Yvonne is survived by her sisters Helen and Edith; her son Tim, daughter-in-law Selina; her daughter Francis, son-in-law Simon; and grandchildren Claire, Kevin, Emma and Owen.

Yvonne was very blessed with good friends and relatives during her lifetime. She was also fortunate to be cared for by a team of wonderful medical doctors and a very kind caregiver. We are also grateful to the caring support from Yee Hong Terrace Garden and Yee Hong Health Service Center.

We are very blessed to be loved by our great sister, mom, mother-in-law, and grandma. We miss you so much!!

Dearest Francis,

I’m sad to hear your mom has passed away. Under your care, it's comforting to know she lived a good long and meaningful life. I will surely miss her kind, warm and gentle smile.

Auntie Yvonne has been my inspiration. She never judged, was always composed and dignified. While she never had to be the center of attention, she was never mistaken as passive. Her confidence and decisiveness spoke volumes. I remember after celebrating my mom’s 80th in Las Vegas, we went to L.A. for a few days. I drove the elderlies back to the hotel after dinner from Santa Monica. It was kind of late, around 9:00-9:30pm, we were sitting in the parking lot deciding if we should go to the Chinese dessert restaurant down the street. No one could decide. Finally your mom said ”去啦!” I thought to myself, haha, Auntie Yvonne has spoken, I complied and happily drove the elderlies to the restaurant. We had delicious馬豆糕, 椰汁糕, 紅豆糕. The restaurant was buzzing and everyone was happy. It was a treat!

Just want to let you know I’m thinking of you and sending you peace and strength at this difficult time.

Much love and take care,
妹妹

I am saddened to hear of Auntie Yvonne's passing. I did not always get to spend too much time with her but I always will remember her warm smile and kind heart. She was always willing to share a meal and go out to family occasions and be a calming presence. I pray that you and Auntie Francis and your family can find peace and solidarity during this time.

A tribute to Yvonne Chong – a longtime friend
“A Gentle Soul”! Yvonne was truly one!
She was gentle, soft speaking, kind-hearted, warm and loving, never a harsh word, a motherly figure among everyone, young and old. It really saddened me when Francis sent me the news of her passing, especially after my husband had passed away just a few months ago.
In the mid-70’s, in the small town of Chemainus on Vancouver Island, my husband and I met Yvonne and her husband Bill, and we became the best of friends. Thus we got to know Francis, Simon, Tim, Selina and their kids, Helen and Francis’ in-laws, the whole clan. Since my husband’s nickname was also Bill, in our circle of friends, he was known as big Bill because he was a tall and strong man, while Francis’ dad was called little Bill.
We were young then, working hard for a living, but we also enjoyed life to the fullest! We often went to each other’s house for dinner, or treated ourselves in a restaurant. We were great travel companions, together we cruised the Caribbean, gorged ourselves on the famous beignets in New Orleans. We drove through the scenic Rocky Mountains all the way to Alberta, to be awed by the colossal dinosaur fossils and skeletons in the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, then later, got lost in the Edmonton Mall! During the two week tour in China, we visited many cities, viewed the terracotta soldiers in the tomb of the First Emperor in Xi-An, took pictures in front of the Imperial Palace and Temple of Haven in Beijing, and climbed a section of the Great Wall. Then we were in Hong Kong, visiting our relatives.
It was a good life, full of fun, with sweet and happy memories that were shared with compatible friends so long ago. With Yvonne gone, I am the one that’s left. At times, I am lost in the misery of losing the ones who were close to my heart. The only comfort that I have is that knowing Yvonne went to join them, to a place where there is no sickness, no pain, no worries and no heartaches, only love, laughter, happiness and peace. But I surely miss every one of them!
May God bless this gentle soul, Yvonne, and grant peace of mind to Francis and her family and all those who have known her. My prayers are with you all! God’s blessings!
Miranda Hwang
