Yee May went through many adversities in her youth and young adulthood. She went through the Japanese occupation and depression in the 1940s. She lost her father to the communist regime. She married her husband in 1947 in a village in Canton, China. After the birth of their son, Ferdinand, her husband went back to Peru to continue his business by himself. It was in 1956 she and her son were finally able to join together as a family and in a few years, 2 daughters, Susanna and Marlene were born. Even though Yee May never received any formal education. She enjoyed spending time with friends and relatives. She spent many hours entertaining them, playing mahjong, cooking up great feasts and seeing her grandchildren grew up.
Yee May was a person with many passions and interests. Most of all, she loved her family and was proud of them. She was an avid gardener and was well known to friends and neighbours for growing the best bitter and winter melons on the street. She often gave away her fruits of labour to her friends and neighbours. Even during her senior years, she insisted on growing her vegetables in her garden so she can continue sharing her vegetables with others.
