Our beloved mother Xiaofang Miao departed this world on September 7, 2024 at the age of 88. We all miss her deeply and will forever hold thoughts and memories of her in our hearts.
She was born in 1936 at NingBo, Zhejiang Province, People’s Republic of China. She was very intelligent in her childhood, demonstrated a keen interest in mathematics and often performed and sang on stage. Her mother Jinhua Yu passed away when she was only 5 years old, and her father Zushou Miao passed away when she was 15. The misfortune of her childhood made her very independent at an early age. Due to her outstanding grades at school, she was unconditionally admitted into the Hangzhou Gudang Sericulture School at the age of 15 without needing to take any entrance exams. Back in those times when education amongst women was not as common as today, she was considered a very well-educated lady. After graduation, she started working in Hangzhou, where she met our father, and got married on June 10, 1961.
Due to the social economic environment in China at the time, difficult times soon followed. One month after marriage, our father was transferred to work in a different city at Wenzhou Agricultural College. In April 1962, she gave birth to her first son, Hang Shi. In July 1964, the second child Jingjing Shi was born. During those unsettling times, our father would often get transferred to work at a different city, and she would always be there for him and follow him from one city to the next. In April 1973, the third child Susu Shi was born. Our family moved to Linhai in 1979 and from hereon, a relatively more stable life has begun. Though the first half of her life was very difficult, she leveraged her great wisdom and perseverance to support the family, giving her children a memorable and loving childhood that ultimately led them to great success in their lives. Her three children were all admitted to Universities and had careers that she’s very proud of. The whole family has always been very grateful and deeply respected her.
In 1994, she was sponsored by her son Hang Shi to come to Canada. Her retirement years would prove to be the happiest and most stable times of her life, surrounded by loved ones until she passed away. She is survived by three children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Our mother is smart, hard-working, strong-minded and yet kind-hearted, meticulous, trustworthy, and always put others ahead of herself. She is a great person and also a loving mother. We will never forget her kind smile and attentive care. May she forever rest in peace in heaven!
