In memory of

William "Bill" Harvey Smeaton

September 7, 1930 -  September 1, 2024

Bill married Letty, the love of his life, in 1955. Rarely has a love endured and even strengthened over 69 years as theirs did. Bill is survived by Letty and their 3 children (Kari, Jacquie and Bill). He was a proud grandfather of 4 (Kate, Scott, Lainey and Max) and great-grandfather to Lenny and Hector. Bill was born the youngest (and only lad) amidst five sisters; Margaret, Mickey, Isabelle, Ruth and Sheila (now all angels) whom Bill considered blessings.

It was defending himself in his sisters' hand-me-down clothing that taught Bill how to be tough, however, it was a teacher who taught him how to be tough with words. He learned many valuable lessons from teachers in his life and respected the profession so much that he cut off his successful career as a master electrician and became a teacher himself.

Bill and Letty loved their cottage in Loring (and so did their kids once the proper plumbing was installed). The cottage was a very rustic and sometimes challenging getaway that often tested Bill’s abilities, temperament and handyman skills, but eventually became their paradise.

Bill was a lover of laughter, language, photography, poetry and music. He created stories like Susie McCorkle, a heroine who used corking to escape perilous situations, and songs about elephants that twinkled in the moonlight.

Perhaps Bill’s most memorable creation was a word used to welcome each early morning at the cottage. He hollered to the heavens as he jumped off the dock into the freezing lake – “Woggle-Doo!” Not sure if that’s how you spell it, but it felt like a welcoming, a greeting of a new day or a new journey. I’m sure that there was a “Woggle-Doo!” ringing out somewhere on September 1st when Bill jumped into his next journey.

Thanks to all who made Bill’s life a happy one, including those at Queen’s Avenue Retirement Residence.

He will be missed by many.

Family and Friends will be received at THE SIMPLE ALTERNATIVE FUNERAL CENTRE- MISSISSAUGA 1535 South Gateway Road (at Dixie Road, two lights south of Eglinton) 905-602-1580 on Sunday, October 27, 2024, for a Celebration of Bill’s Life from 1-3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Society would be appreciated by the family.

“Husband, Dad, Grandad, Great Grandad, Brother, Uncle Billy & Friend.”

I have the honour of knowing Bill these past few years at Queen's Avenue Retirement Residence.
Bill was one of my favourite residents (I know I'm not supposed to have a favourite), he was such a kind, funny and gentle soul. I will miss him dearly.
Sending my heartfelt sympathies to Kari, Jacquie, Bill and your entire family.

Kari and family
Fond memories of Saug and your noisey family down the shoreline. When my parents sold their cottage for another place outside Parry Sound they never looked back. Sadly to say we didnt really miss you folks.

Wishing you all well. I know your dad was slowing down last time we spoke Kari. His passing a blessing in disguise perhaps. Take care
