Wei Ming Wong of Whitby, Ontario, passed away peacefully with her loving daughter and son-in-law by her side at Lakeridge Health Hospital from a stroke, on July 20, 2023 at the age of 92 years.

Wei Ming was born on August 10, 1930 in Tokyo, Japan to Qui Xin Yao and You Wen Wang. She moved to Laibin, Guangxi Province, China, when she was a toddler. She graduated from Zhongshan University in China with a Bachelor’s Degree in English literature. She then worked in the Ministry of Culture as an English translator and then as a teacher in the Department of Education in China. She married her college sweetheart Parn Chew Wong in 1953 and the couple demonstrated their resilience and perseverance during the Cultural Revolution in China from 1966 to 1976. When they immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1980, she worked on miscellaneous jobs before continuing her career in teaching until full retirement in 1995. She lived in Scarborough beginning in 1989 until she moved to Oshawa in 1999 before settling in Whitby in 2021.

Wei Ming had a keen passion for dancing. She never missed the weekly Sunday night Lawrence Welk TV show. When she was an English translator, she frequently participated in government social dance functions. During retirement, she was active in monthly Zhongshan University alumni reunions and dance parties where she met her companion Walter Mel Suddard of Oshawa. She also enjoyed traveling, knitting, watching classic movies, and singing.

Wei Ming was predeceased by her husband Parn Chew, her companion Mel, and her brother Yuen Ming. She is survived by her three children, Xiu Wei, Chao Young, and Hai Yan; her six grandchildren, Debra, Kimberly, Jane, David, Jennifer, and Tiffany; and her great-grandson, Storm.

I can't tell you how lucky i was to have Ming join in the fam when I was 7 years old. She was always super sweet, funny, and the life of the party at fam gatherings. Everyone loved her at GHT and for good reason. Ming will be forever missed.

Hi Po Po,

Please rest in peace. You are with Grandpa Wong now.
Please do not worry too much about us - we will take care of each other. I will take care of mom, dad, this family and make sure we stay strong and fight with ALL of my strength to conquer all of the obstacles we face. Make sure we don't get taken advantage of by anyone.

Thank you for everything and it was a pleasure meeting you. You are truly an Angel. on Earth and Heaven gained another Angel.

Thank you for ALL of your encouragement and support when I was in school, finding and retaining jobs. Thank you for also believing in me. Thank you for listening to my job successes of being able to retain jobs. I know you are worried about me too.

One day we will meet again and will pray for you!

I will miss you and our phone calls, check ins and having meals together.

Ming was a quiet and thoughtful person, but when she spoke, she made an impact. We enjoyed hearing her stories about her travels and her work, as well as her observations about life in general. Anyone who knew Ming will remember that she had a hearty appetite and liked to stay fit - it was not unusual to find her out walking, doing kung fu or going to dances. I enjoyed sharing a green tea with her.

Ming had an extensive wardrobe and a fine collection of shoes. She loved getting dressed up and going out to dinners and parties. She and Mel co-existed nicely.and In their younger day they were always on the go. The only thing they disagreed about was the music. (She loved classical and he loved Dean Martin) Ming selected a terrific nursing home at Glen Hill Terrace where she received good care and made many friends. She will be missed.
