In memory of

Michael Wareing

October 10, 1941 -  November 18, 2023

It is with great sadness that the family of Michael Wareing, 82, of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, announce his passing on 18 November 2023. He was born in Rochdale, England, in 1941 to parents John and Florence (Brierley). He had fond early memories of spending time with extended family on holidays. His athletic interests were soccer and competitive cycling with the West Pennine Road Club. He attended the Rochdale Technical College and apprenticed to become a sheet metal worker following in the footsteps of his father. In 1966 he journeyed across the Atlantic looking for a new opportunity in Canada, starting in Toronto and then moving out to the West Coast of British Columbia, eventually settling in Vancouver. It was in Vancouver in January 1967 where he met his future wife Violetta (Grigoroff). In Vancouver he continued competitive cycling with the Vancouver Bike Club, which included being a member of a relay team to complete a 32 hr ride from Calgary to Vancouver in celebration of Canada’s centennial year and promote the sport of cycling. In 1968 he married Violetta in her hometown of Kitchener, Ontario. Together they began their family in Vancouver with the birth of their first son Martin (1968 - 2015) and then moved to Seattle. In 1970 they moved back to Canada, settling in Toronto where they had their second son, Andrew, in 1971. In 1975 the family moved to Mississauga, near Streetsville, where they lived until 2022. During this time Michael pursued hobbies in genealogy and history. He became involved in the community with Scouts Canada, first as a cub leader then moving to a leadership role in the Mississauga district scouting office. He was a longtime member then president of the condominium board representing the property where they lived. He was involved with soccer as an official and continued recreational distance cycling which included being a member of the Credit Valley Cycling Club (formerly the Healing Cycle Club). He will forever be remembered as a loving husband and father who always put his family first without hesitation; his honesty and kindness toward others. Michael is survived by his wife Violetta, son Andrew (Cynthia), daughter-in-law Trish, grandchildren Alexander, Ciara, Brayden, Jacob and Jillian, and sisters Kathleen and Margaret.

Cremation has taken place. A private family gathering to celebrate Michael's life will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

Betty and I were long time friends of Mike and Vi and their kids. I loved to be part of their activities when we lived close to each in Scarborough. Mike and I loved to play Chess and Tennis, and, while we played Chess, Betty and Vi would play Scrabble. We were very competitive and loved each other's comaraderie. I loved his famous Brit expression when he got 'mildly angry' at something or someone: "Bloody 'ell I say!". We both loved Soccer and commented on our National Teams-Manchester U and AC Milan, just like my Italian roots and many other sports we saw on TV. Most of all I remember his Cycling skills and the many Kilometers he would bike to get ready for a competition. Mike had such a great smile and laugh that made you feel he was your best friend. He was very kind, thoughtful, insightful, wise, and he always thought before responding to any questions. I don't remember him ever get 'hot under the collar' and always kept his cool and calm. Betty and I will miss him dearly and we have so many great memories that we hold onto-especially the last reunion we had-The Old Gang Reunion of 50 years in Whitby. We look at that picture on our wall all the time and the great friends that we all hung around with since 1969.
I feel very blessed to have been Mike's close friend all these years. May the good Lord have a spot for him in His 'Heavenly Soccer Team' and His 'Championship Cycling Club'. Love you Mike and may you enjoy your 'New Teams'.

Mike was such an honest, kind-hearted family man. I will miss our chats about his riding adventures and soccer. May he rest in peace and his family find strength during this difficult time.
