Walter’s family is heartbroken to announce his passing on May 31, 2024, at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. He was 88 years old. He passed away peacefully in the presence of his son, Gregory, his future daughter in law, Katerina, sister, sister-in-law, brother in laws, nephews, nieces, future in-laws and caregivers. Walter was predeceased by his beloved wife Irene, whom he married in 1965 whom he deeply loves. They were married for over 56 years. Walter and Irene will be dearly missed by their only child and son, Gregory. They were extremely close. Walter was the beloved son of the late Yuk Kee Tsang and Chak Shun Lau and brother of Lily, Stephen, Alfred and Rhonda. He will also be missed by his sister in laws Mabel, Mary Anne, Florence, his nephews and nieces.
Walter was a devoted Christian, elder in his Church, a devoted husband, father, teacher, choir conductor, and pioneer. He was fluent in English, French, Cantonese and Mandarin and was often asked to MC weddings and to attend meetings with Government officials. He enjoyed tennis, basketball. He very much enjoyed travelling to destinations with his wife and son. He liked to discuss politics and often spoke highly of his meeting with former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and his interactions with the former Prime Minister Paul Martin whom his son, Gregory, worked for. Walter immigrated to Canada in 1965 and completed his studies at McGill University. He went on to have a distinguished career in the federal Public Service for over 30 years. Walter facilitated the immigration of his father, mother, siblings to Canada in 1965, the same year he married his wife, Irene.
Visitation will take place at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre (375 Mount Pleasant Rd.) on Saturday, June 15 from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm, followed by a service in the chapel at 1:30 pm. Burial to follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
