Traditional Chinese culture is famous for mothers who go out of their way to not get along with their daughter-in-law. Not here. My aunt (a-mǔ) and her mother-in-law (my grandmother) showed that mutual kindness and respect are the stuff of matriarchs. We kids always looked forward to visits by a-mǔ and her family and later, the weddings, funerals, festivities that marked each passing milestone of the Ngs in Canada.
