In memory of Wah-Lit “Edward” Lui

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Wah-Lit “Edward” Lui. Edward passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on September 23, 2020, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Wai-Lee “Catherine” Lui and cherished father of Edwina and Andrew.

Born in Hong Kong at the cusp of the Second World War, Edward was the second-eldest son of Lui Ting-Kwan and Lui Chai-Wong. A happy, mischievous childhood with his nine other siblings would lead him to US shores where he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 1966. He returned to Hong Kong after graduation to pursue a career in teaching.

After fending off numerous crushes, Edward married fellow teacher, Catherine, on July 28, 1971. The newlywed couple made the courageous decision to emigrate to Canada in search of a better future, touching down at Pearson International on a snowy Boxing Day in 1973. The family would then be blessed with the births of Edwina and Andrew.

Edward approached life with a fun-loving, easy-going disposition. He was always willing to lend a hand and made friends easily wherever he went. Without exception, Edward would put the needs of others before his own. He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humour and his ability to bring light to any situation, even in his final moments.

Apart from family, his greatest love was food. Whether it was dim sum, barbeque, fresh seafood or French pastry, good food would always make Edward smile. Coffee was a daily necessity which he enjoyed every morning. He also loved spending quality time with friends and family and, on occasion, travelling to far off places around the world with his wife and kids. Edward remained an avid tennis fanatic throughout his life.

Wah-Lit “Edward” Lui will be greatly missed but never forgotten. He is survived by his wife, son Andrew, daughter Edwina, son-in-law Serge, and a large extended family including four brothers (and four sisters-in-law), three sisters, six nieces and five nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations in loving memory of Wah-Lit “Edward” Lui to be made to the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook using the following link: https://donate.sunnybrook.ca/tribute. Alternatively, you can click on the "Donate" button located below.

Brother Ed will be remembered as a person who always smiles, rarely gets angry and never loses his temper in any situation. He is fun, has a great sense of humour, amiable and a caring brother. I am so proud of him, even though he lost the battle to cancer, he was a winner in life! He built up a comfortable home for himself, his beloved wife and the two great children through hardships and without complaints.
I will miss you, brother, but you will live in my heart!

Uncle Edward, you will be missed. I will always remember you with a big smile or laughing as you chased us when we were kids, playing tag or hide and seek. You always made time to join in our silly activities. I will never forget your gentle, kind, and loving soul.
