In memory of

Van Thong La

June 26, 1949 -  May 23, 2021

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Van Thong La, who passed peacefully on May 23, 2021 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He will be greatly missed by his cherished wife of 37 years, Ying, who was at his side when he passed.

Van was also the beloved father of their three daughters, Wendy, Wanda, and Veronica and father-in-law to Vincent, Bell, and Min, who were all blessed to have such an exceptional figure in their lives. He was the most loving Gong-Gong to his two young grandchildren, Leighton and Beverley, with whom he made many wonderful memories over the last few years. As the oldest of 9 siblings, Van will be truly missed by his brothers and sisters, as well as by his nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Van lived a vibrant and fulfilling life; while dedicated to his job as an automotive technician for 30 years, Van was also an amazing cook and loved to discover new recipes in his spare time to share with others. His love for cooking was only surpassed by his love for his family. His cheerful, kind, and generous nature will be missed by all those who knew him.

The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at both Michael Garron Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for the wonderful care of their Dad in his final days.

Due to COVID 19 restrictions, visitation on June 5th and June 6th will be by invitation only. A private burial at Pine Hills Cemetery will take place on June 7th.

I worked with Van the past 10 years here at City Buick and it was an absolute pleasure to have known and worked with Van. Day after day Van always had a great attitude, was quick to smile, and positively impact those around him. Van, you will be dearly missed by the City Team.

I am so very sorry to hear the news about Van. I had the privilege to work with Van at City Buick for 20+ years. Van was a critical part of our work family from the minute he joined the team in 1990. Van's smile and his laugh remain my greatest memory of him, it was rare he wasn't doing one of those. I had numerous dialogs with Van about how proud he was of his daughters -- over the years -- he beamed with pride when he spoke of them. It was clear how much he loved his family. Van was a great man who made a big impact on many people. He will be missed.

I have known Van since he started at City in 1990. He has always been a very good friend and I will miss his fantastic sense of humour and infectious smile.
