In memory of

Timothy John Winter Hodges

April 16, 1947 -  February 7, 2022

Tim passed unexpectedly on Feb 7, 2022 in his adopted second home of Costa Rica.

The son of John Winter Hodges and Joan Estella Hodges (nee Andrews), Tim was born in Peshawar, Pakistan. Shortly after his birth, the demands of British military family life brought him to Rhodesia, Africa. There he spent his formative years and at the tender age of 19, the youthful spirit of adventure brought him to Canada. What began as a mere intention to complete his education blossomed into the establishment of a life and family in Toronto and Oakville.

In his later years, Tim divided his time between North Toronto and the wilderness of Costa Rica, following the warmth of the long-standing camaraderie of close groups of friends. Though private by nature, Tim’s wit and enthusiasm was always coaxed forth by times shared with mates. He was a loyal companion to so many around the world.

Tim’s fondest love was saved for his family – his younger brothers Anthony and Mark, his children Paul and Clara, grandchildren Evan, Ana, Lila and Julia and his extended family around the world in South Africa, the UK and the Netherlands. With his grandkids he found the utmost pleasure in the simple shared moments of a game of chess, a card trick, or writing letters back and forth.

Tim's greatness was in his devotion to the things that mattered most to him. His simple love of a good story, the comfort of a sundowner, and the presence of the ones he loved, and who loved him. He will be missed.

Acknowledging Tim’s great dryness of wit, he shared his response to a US border security guard reviewing his passport who asked him what was his reason for being in Pakistan - “ To be close to my mother at birth, of course.” The humour was probably lost on his interrogator.

Fare thee well my friend, on this your next voyage.
