In memory of

Sujit Sengupta

June 13, 1950 -  February 13, 2024

Sujit Sengupta passed away courageously at North York General Hospital. He was the adored son of Gouri and Santi especially as he was the first-born. He will be missed by his loving wife of 47 years, Sheila, daughters Sonia and Sabrina (Bill). Sujit was a doting grandfather to Caroline, Gordon and Eddie and enjoyed the time he spent with them. He was the beloved brother of Sumana (Chandru) and special uncle to Sujon.

Born in Kolkata, India, Sujit went to the UK to study at Loughborough University, where he graduated with a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering. He subsequently moved to Canada in 1979 and started many business ventures close to his heart. Sujit was an astute businessman, and respected by his colleagues for his honesty, integrity and sincerity.

Sujit enjoyed sports and had a love for golf and cricket. He played golf regularly and enjoyed watching the major tournaments with friends. In his schooldays he was an exciting footballer and an extremely fast swing bowler in cricket.

In the true sense Sujit was a “foodie” and loved different kinds of cuisine. He frequented many restaurants all over the world, and entertained family and friends often. He loved cooking on the barbeque and amongst other things, his steaks were done to perfection. He also had a passion for good wines, especially the vintage wines from Italy and France.

In addition to his many passions and pursuits, Sujit was known for his deep affection for animals, particularly his dogs. He cherished the serene moments spent walking his dogs through the trails of Sunnybrook Park. Sujit’s heart always seemed to brighten in the presence of a furry friend.

In his quiet moments, Sujit could often be found with the television tuned to MSNBC, staying informed about the current events and engaging with the world around him. This was a testament to his curiosity and his desire to understand the complexities of the world. He also had an infectious passion for cars and gadgets. He was always eager to explore the latest advancements and discover how they could enhance our daily lives.

Sujit will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and his pets. The staff from the daycare centre were close to his heart at the end of his journey, and they will always remember him as a kind and decent soul. Sujit’s warmth, generosity and unwavering loyalty, defined his life. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and cherished memories that will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

My sincere & heartfelt condolences to Sheila Mami, Sonia, Sabrina & family. I know that I speak for my mother (Khuku/Madhusree) & aunt (chordi/Jayasree) and the rest of my own family when I say how saddened we are of this great loss. I read the personal biography of Kakon mama and having known him for well over 40 years that he was all that & more. He was always a source of great strength to his family & anyone close to him. My own father passed away 10 years ago & we will be remembering him a few days from now as well. My grief seemed unbearable at the time but with the grace of God we managed those days & I know that He will be there for you all as well at this time of pain & loss. May peace be with you always. Sujit and I had agreed to "spoil the grandchildren" -- he was able to find the common narrative between people. He took a generous view to his life in Canada, Sabrina in particular remembering amusing stories about going skiing with her dad and with Sonia. We will have to continue without him.

Our Dada was and forever will be the kind, caring and gentle force in our lives. Always there, always full of love and never losing his calm. A true true dada, who always made it always about us, all conversations were about us, all thoughts were about us.
I guess because his presence was so loving and we could feel it even from a distance, the loss is even bigger.
Love you dada.
