In memory of

Stavros Kontogeorgis

October 3, 1933 -  June 23, 2020

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father and grandfather, Stavros Kontogeorgis. He died peacefully at the age of 86 on June 23, 2020. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Efthimia, his two children Amalia and Elias (Susan) and his four grandchildren Margo (Chris), Kosta, Steven (Tamara) and Timothy. Stavros cherished the relationships he had with them.

Stavros was born on October 3, 1933 in Skoura, Greece. He was the son of Elias Kontogeorgis and Amalia Tsimicalis, and the second of three boys. Unfortunately, he suffered profound sadness growing up as a child during the Second World War. His father was killed when he was 10 and his beloved older brother Mitsos was taken away four years later. Stavros carried the pain for his entire life and always carried a photo of his older brother with him.

Stavros moved to Canada in 1957 before going back to Greece to find a wife in 1962. He met Efthimia and they wed three weeks later. Stavros then brought Efthimia to Canada in 1963. They settled in Toronto and built a wonderful life together. They had two children, worked extremely hard and created countless memories. Stavros was then blessed with four grandchildren who loved him dearly. He was extremely proud to take his children and grandchildren with him everywhere he went.

Stavros loved cooking, music and spending time with family and friends. He was a chef in many restaurants, notably a U.S Army base in Frobisher Bay, Nunavut in 1961. He shared stories of several soldiers eating up to 12 eggs in a single sitting. His grandchildren also looked forward to his famous breakfasts on Saturday morning. Despite his cooking skills, he despised the sight and smell of cheese. Stavros was an avid singer and serenaded many during weddings and parties. In his later years, Stavros and Efthimia took regular trips to Greece after building a beautiful house in his village of Skoura. Shortly after turning 80, Stavros developed renal kidney failure and was on dialysis for his remaining years. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers a donation be made in Stavros’ memory to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
