In memory of

Joan S. Mootoo

Joan S. Mootoo, born Joan Ann Sookwantie Jodah on September 26, 1947 in Columbia, Guyana, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Joan was the loving wife of Patanjili Mootoo for 46 years, his sweet “J”. Mother of Jaya Mootoo (Chris Szypulewski) and Raya Mootoo. Grandmother “Babi” to Evan, Kaya, Naya and the many pets of the Mootoo-Szypulewski family. Loving sister of the Jodah family and sister-in-law to the Mootoo/Chinapen family.

Joan came to Canada from Guyana in 1974, residing in Montreal, Quebec, Canada where she worked in retail at Marks and Spencer’s. In 1988, Joan moved to Mississauga, Ontario with the transfer of Pat’s job. For 20 years, Joan operated Ezee Swim Swimming School in Mississauga, where she loved to help families to learn how to swim.

The best tea maker, teacup, teapot and elephant collector, gardener and cook extraordinaire, celebrator and decorator of all holidays, avid fan of various sports, and lover of all things “Gaudy”…and so much more… Joan will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

I was blessed that you were my second mum.

You listened, you put me in my place, you supported me, you loved me, you cheered me on, you taught me about unwanteds, you laughed at me and with me, you taught me it was okay to be me and know what I want and you pushed me to think for myself (aka not call you at 7am asking where the stapler is 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️).

I’m not great at showing my appreciation or keeping in contact, but I am sooooo appreciative of what you taught me and your love.

This last year has been hard for you and you have gone through so much. I’m so grateful the Gups, Pat and Raya took such good care of you as without that, I’m not confident we would have had you with us as long as we did.

I know you wanted more time here with your loved ones and we all wanted more time with you. Wherever you are, now that you have left this earth, I hope you are able to watch your grandbabies, while also making sure they hear and feel you. Knowing you, they will know when you aren’t happy but also feel your love.

I hope wherever you are allows days off when you have an unwanteds!

Raya, Pat, Jaya and family, my deepest condolences.
