In memory of

Simon Monk

Simon Monk, 64, of Toronto passed away on Friday October 21st surrounded by family and friends in his home after a lengthy battle with cancer.

The son of Michael and Rosalee, brother to Hilary and Adam, he is survived by his children, Rachel and Joshua.

Having graduated from University of Toronto engineering, he worked at Kodak, Litton Systems, Allied Signal, and Honeywell. Simon was Six Sigma Black Belt certified: known internationally in the industry for his expertise.

A lifelong jazz lover, Simon began playing trombone with the Tom de Mores Orchestra while still in high school. He played with many bands over the years, including the 48th Highlanders Military Band, the Hurricanes Dance Band and led the Lady Godiva Memorial Band. In later years, he organized and conducted the Honeywell choir and sang in a barbershop quartet. He especially loved supporting and sharing jazz music through volunteering with CJRT/Jazz.FM and playing jazz to anyone who would listen.

A huge cycling fan, he participated in many recreational and charity cycling groups and rides over the years, such as the Toronto Bike Club and the Becel Ride for Heart. Notably, he is a 15 year veteran of the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation’s Ride to Conquer Cancer. He got many colleagues involved in the Ride by encouraging them to bike to work like he did.

Simon loved cross country skiing and would get out on the trails whenever he could, both with the Trakkers Ski Club and on his own.

He will be much missed for his humour and kindness, his incredible courage and tenacity, and his devotion to family.

Meeting Simon at one of the Ride to Conquer Cancer evenings years ago and then riding with him as one of his teammates was truly my honour. Simon fought long and hard against his cancer and the personal toll it took on him never affected his ability to inspire those around him. I will miss Simon’s friendship and his camaraderie. I send my deepest condolences to his family.

Simon and I shared so many common interests - engineering, aircraft, bicycling and singing. More recently Simon was willing to share his experiences as I was treated for throat cancer.

He was brave, kind, driven to excel in everything he turned his hand to, resilient, adaptable. Above all he had the most incredible positive outlook on life and the beauty of the world around us.

Simon loved people - especially people singing or playing music live. He thought conducting a large band was one of life's greatest thrills.

He left an impact on so many people in the way he lived his life - never complaining about his situation. A tremendous positive attitude!

Farewell my friend. You will be deeply missed!

Simon and I met in the autumn of '77. We were attending 1st yr Engineering at the University of Toronto. We both had an interest in music, which was how we met. The word "audition" may not be quite appropriate for initiation into the "Lady Godiva memorial Band"(AKA "BNAD"); however, I with my trumpet and Simon with his trombone were trying to make good first impressions on the band's upperclassmen. I was "blown away" by the skill and ability that Simon exhibited. I heard rumours that, on occasion, some member of the Faculty of Music also sat-in with the band. I thought Simon certainly must have been one of those rare few. Days later I was utterly shocked when Simon sat down beside me in a calculus lecture and said "Hi Reid, good to see you again!". We became friends and although we only had few classes together, I could always count on seeing Simon at band events. At the start of 2nd year there was the to-be-expected turn-over of the band's leadership. I quickly volunteered to be a co-leader but as the term waned, in parallel to my grades, I realized that I could not continue as a leader. Simon and I both wanted to contribute to the band's success and to it's continuity. Although my request came with a bit of guilt, for both Simon and I knew that leading the band would require a significant commitment of effort and time, Simon graciously accepted my request to take on the role of leader, for which I felt eternally indebted.
Sometime later on, he and a few members of the band, with some friends and classmates, went to see a science fiction movie that was getting some interesting reviews. Simon and I both thought the music was quite good, and although I thought the over-budgeted "B" movie would be forgotten and disappear into obscurity, Simon thought it would catch-on and one day could become quite popular. The movie was Star Wars.
As is the way of life, close friends may walk diverging paths and perhaps never see each other again, but that was not to be the case. Several decades may have slipped by, but Simon, I, and a few other who had seen the first Star Wars film, got together again to watch yet another in the series. Although we all thought the music was excellent, I found the movie to be somewhat lacking. Simon, however, was able to enjoy and appreciation it.
Simon was always one who could find the brighter side of any situation.
It is in that spirit that I think I will remember Simon best.
Be at peace my friend.

I got to know Simon through cycling with him in the Toronto Bicycle Club. He was a wonderful person. Always helpful, cheerful, and optimistic. He will be missed. My heart goes out to his family and many friends.
