SIINA (SINAIDA) LORENDA ALKOK (nee SINIJÄRV) Passed away peacefully at Suomi Koti Finnish Nursing Home on August 10, 2018 at the age of 97. Predeceased by her husband Arnold (1985). Loving Mami to her son Hillar and his wife Anne, and to daughter Sirje Lillian and her husband Robert Lennox. Beloved Vanaema to grandchildren Steven, David (Dayna) and Kristina Alkok and Ashley Lennox (Kalev).

Siina was born in Hiiumaa, Estonia. At the age of 23, she made a last minute decision and left her family and homeland to escape the invading Soviet Communists. She took the last seat on a small boat that was loading a ship to Sweden – a ship named ‘Inge’. She lived in Sweden for 8 years, where she fell in love and married fellow expat Arnold. Fearing aggressive repatriation politics by the Soviet Union, the newly married couple crossed the ocean on their honeymoon, and arrived in Halifax in 1952, to start their lives anew in Canada.

Siina will be fondly remembered for her Christian values, inner strength, strong work ethic and her motherly love and warm smile.

The family would like to thank the Nursing Staff at Suomi Koti Finnish Nursing Home, who provided fellowship and compassionate care for Sinaida. Our Mom lived on the 7th floor of Suomi Koti for over 10 years.

Funeral service at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, on Friday, August 24, 2018, at 11 am. Visitation one hour prior to service. Interment to follow. If desired, floral tributes are welcome as are Memorial donations to either the Estonian Foundation of Canada or Suomi Koti Finnish Nursing Home.

Remembering with sadness and love my wonderful aunt Siina. She was a significant supportive influence on my life growing up, and a valuable, complementary counterpoint to her sister and my mother. Always quiet and reserved, she nonetheless illustrated by example how to enjoy the good times in life, and persevere, without complaint through the difficult times. She was there for me and my sisters through her entire life, even in the final months. I celebrate her life, and will always remember her and her positive impact.

Siina and her siblings encountered a German U-boat as they crossed the Baltic Sea to Sweden. The captain of the Inge had the presence of mind to steer the boat toward Germany when he saw the U-boat heading toward them. Once gone, their boat changed course and continued to Sweden. History and our family's life stories would have looked totally different had their boat been sunk. The obvious: I would not be writing this.
