In memory of
Shuk Ying Tung 董淑英
September 3, 1930 -
April 22, 2019
Shuk Ying Tung 董淑英 passed away peacefully on Monday, Apr 22, 2019 at Mackenzie Health Hospital, at the age of 88.
Beloved mother of Alice Cheung 張麗嫦 and her husband Chi Ming Tam 譚志明, Keith Cheung 張志強, Walter Cheung 張志奎and his wife Doris Tsang 曾玉玲, and Janice Cheung 張麗雯. Adored grandmother of Zin Ling Tam 譚羨靈, Zin Yan Tam 譚羨恩, and Cheuk Lun Cheung 張卓倫.
Widowed with four children since 1979 and armed with only basic literacy, Shuk Ying washed dishes at a local restaurant in Hong Kong to support her family. The working hours were long and the condition poor. Nonetheless she worked tirelessly without complaints.
Shuk Ying emigrated from Hong Kong to Canada in 1991 when she was 60 years old. In her early years of living in Canada, knowing no English, she was brave enough to navigate through the myriad of buses, subway trains, and streetcars, traveling alone from her home in Thornhill to Toronto Chinatown to either learn English at a senior centre or meet friends or relatives over dim sum.
Not to be fooled by her small frame, Shuk Ying had stamina and strength. Her last long haul flight from Hong Kong back to Toronto was in the summer of 2017. And she loved to travel. Even well into her 70s and 80s, Shuk Ying visited many far flung places including England, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Disney World in Orlando. Not to mention multiple trips she took to Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China to visit family over the years.
She started encountering health issues in the Fall of 2017 and was diagnosed with chronic heart failure last August. Although Shuk Ying was considerably slowed down by the disease, she still loved a game of mahjong with family at home.
Shuk Ying will be fondly remembered.
