Sharron Elizabeth Thomas
Orangeville, ON – Sharron E. Thomas nee Brooks, died peacefully on October 28, 2023, surrounded by family at the Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville, Ontario. Born in East Preston on August 18, 1949, she was the first of nine children born late Walter and Elizabeth (Colley) Brooks.
Sharron’s early years were spent living on Colley’s Hill (Upper Grosvenor Road) in East Preston, NS. She attended Partridge River Public School in East Preston. It was in grade two that she became starstruck with Barrey Thomas and vowed that she would marry him one day. The two would spend 55 wonderful, wedded years together. As the older sister, she was tasked to ‘mind her brothers and sisters’ which likely nurtured her maternal instincts. While attending Graham Creighton Highschool she participated in various sports and performed well academically.
Sharron and Barrey wed in July 1968. Shortly following the birth of their first child Husani (Colin) they experienced a devastating housefire, losing all their possessions. Soon after, another tragedy struck when they would lose their second son at birth. An eventual move to Dartmouth marked the arrival of their third and fourth sons, Jabari and Anane. Their family continued to grow until the daughter they prayed for, princess Abeni was born.
Sharron often reminisced of her time while working as an administrative assistant at the Black United Front (BUF) in Nova Scotia. She was adored by her colleagues noting her impeccable work ethic and pleasant demeanor. Her infectious smile landed her on the cover of the 10 Year Anniversary Edition of GRASP, a Publication by the Black United Front (BUF). After working at BUF for several years, an intelligent and ambitious Sharon resumed her educational pursuits attending Dalhousie University, TYP. She later studied Stenography offered by ManPower, all while working and taking care of her family. After moving to Toronto, Ontario in 1990 she continued working as an administration professional at Purolator Courier, Pepsi Co. and Ingram Micro.
She undeniably expressed her love through food preparing the most delicious dishes and desserts. Sharron was an amazing cook who was often hired to cater small and intimate events. She would spend countless days baking for her family on holidays while creating many cherished memories. Sharron dedicated her life to her husband, children, extended family, and friends and spread her unconditional love to all those that had the pleasure to cross her path.
She spent her life taking care of her family and friends with open arms. Sharron gave her life to God and walked in her faith all the days of her life, trusting, and knowing that God would always take the wheel in her journey. She was a member of the Victoria Road United Baptist Church until she moved to Ontario and found a home with Cooksville United Church some years later.
Sharron is predeceased by her parents Walter and Elizabeth (Colley) Brooks, grandparents Richard and Alice (Neal) Brooks, James and Harriet (Diggs) Colley, sisters Geretta (Medley) Williams and Anna Brooks, brothers Walter and Larry Brooks, sons Jabari (Soo Yee) and Baby Boy Thomas, nieces Dawn Medley & Jasmin Kirts, and nephew Steven Colley.
