Deacon Samuel Lun Bernard Chan went to be with our Lord on August 10, 2025 at the age of 85 after a brief illness at Scarborough General Hospital. Born in Hong Kong, Deacon Sam studied Education and became a teacher of Geography and English before he met and married Louise in 1966. A few years later, they immigrated and settled in Toronto, Canada as a young family with their son, Clement. Soon after they welcomed their 2nd son, Ambrose. In Canada, he was very proud of his work as a civil servant for the Canadian government and completed an Economics degree at York University while working full time and raising a young family. Deacon Sam later accomplished the completion of his Master of Theological Studies at Tyndale University in 2000 where he graduated alongside his dear wife.
Sam loved God and was a faithful servant at Toronto Chinese Baptist Church where he was ordained as a Deacon in 1976. After moving to Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church, he committed to teaching God’s Word and continued his role as Deacon until his recent retirement in December 2024. He had an appreciation for art, nature, music, reading and a deep love for his family, the church, and God’s Word. Deacon Sam was unwavering in faith, an encouragement to those around him and committed to serving the Lord, not only as Deacon but as Sunday School teacher, fellowship counsellor, faithful husband, loving father and doting grandfather. Deacon Sam was lovingly known for his signature laugh and cheerful smile. He will be dearly missed by his wife Louise, his children Clement and Ambrose (Michelle), his grandchildren, Sarah and Alexander, his siblings Yuk Mui (deceased), Ellen, Rosemary, David (Esther), Edith (Godfrey), Phyllis, and Peter (Virginia), his nieces and nephews Albert, Amy, Patty, Jason, Janice (Conor), William, and Cynthia, friends and brothers and sisters at Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church.
