Ruth died peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving children, Daniel Kennedy and Joanna Krongold, on April 26, 2024 after a difficult illness.
Born to the late Reva (Birnbaum) Krongold and the late Joseph Krongold in Toronto on April 17, 1951, Ruth grew up surrounded by loving immediate and extended family. A hard worker and an avid learner from a young age, Ruth excelled in public school and Hebrew school. As a young adult, she sought out communities of compassionate equality, working on Kibbutz Ein Hashofet in Israel and as a childcare worker in Ontario. She later obtained a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Toronto with the aim of helping others and advancing social justice in her professional life. This she did for decades, eventually establishing her own private psychotherapy practice based on values of acceptance and hope.
In addition to her work life, Ruth was an utterly devoted mother who created an environment of respect, imagination, and love in the home. She raised Daniel and Joanna in a household full of stories, music, fun, and laughter, encouraging her children to freely express their thoughts and feelings.
Ruth took great joy immersing herself in the natural world and instilled this passion in her children. She loved Canadian landscapes and reveled in trips to the Rockies, Newfoundland, and the high Arctic. The lakes and forests of Muskoka and Algonquin were, in her mind, her natural biome, and she never missed an opportunity for an early morning swim, a sunset paddle, or a snowshoe through the glistening snowy woods.
A loyal friend to many, Ruth fostered relationships of depth and meaning, often extending over decades. She was a great listener and embraced her friends with a spirit of appreciation, reciprocity, and love.
As a trusted counsellor, deeply caring mother, keen nature lover, and constant friend, Ruth made a profoundly positive impact on those she encountered. Her warmth, generosity, sense of humour, and vitality made the world a better place.
Ruth’s funeral service will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at 1:00pm. Masks are encouraged. Reception to follow. A shiva will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 from 2:00pm-4:00pm and 7:00pm-9:00pm at 75 Magpie Crescent, North York, Ontario.
