In memory of

Robin Barfoot

October 22, 1940 -  August 20, 2023

Robin always said he didn’t think he would live to a ripe old age but somehow, he beat the odds and almost made it to 83. Not too shabby!

Born 22 Oct 1940 at Kingston-upon-Thames, UK, Robin died at his home in Toronto on 20 Aug 2023 as a result of cancer and various heart-related issues.

Predeceased by his parents, George and Elsie Barfoot of West Sussex, UK, Robin is survived by his wife, Grace, of 55 years, son, Timothy (Pamela) and Samantha his granddaughter. He is also survived by his identical twin John (Kerry), and sister, Mary (Barrie d. Jan 2021) all of West Sussex, UK.

With no particular plan in mind, Robin, like, many other young Brits, immigrated to Canada in 1967 on the SS Carmania where he met Grace Charron travelling home after a year-long hiatus in Europe. Within a year, Robin and Grace were married and en-route to Australia via the SS Canberra.

The next two years were spent in NSW and the UK before the couple returned to North America where they settled themselves in Toronto. Once established in Toronto, Robin worked as an Electronics Engineer for Decca Radar and later as an Engineer and Program Manager for AlliedSignal (now Honeywell) where he stayed until his retirement in 2000.

Of all the leisure-time activities he undertook, Robin enjoyed sailing his Laser I sailboat the most. He also enjoyed cycling in Europe, Badminton, golf, lawn bowling and Bruce Trail hiking. During the colder months, he and Grace supported the Tarragon Theatre and lectures at LLIR (Living & Learning in Retirement).

Sadly, Robin left us on 20 Aug 2023. Cremation has already taken place but there will be an informal gathering at Mount Pleasant Cemetery on 8 Sept 2023 from 1pm to 3pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

We spent good times in and out of school, chasing around on small motorcycles. Much later, reuniting in Toronto, enjoying a few beers over Indian meals, hiking and generally messing about. We shall miss you, Robin.

I first met Robin at Raynes Park County Grammar School i near Wimbledon, U.K. in 1951. Although we lost touch over the years, I reconnected with him after 1986 in Toronto and we shared many happy evenings together with school friends living in Canada. We joined up and formed a successful Pub Trivia team formed mainly from our old school friends. Robin was always cheerful, smart and with an amazing memory. Our beer and curry evenings and reminiscences were a special joy. We shared a love of the outdoors and birds.
Eva and I send our condolences to his family and especially to Grace and twin brother John, also an old school chum
