In memory of

Robert Richard Smerage

January 6, 1946 -  August 29, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the sudden passing of Robert Richard Smerage. He will be deeply missed by his sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Maralyn Smerage. He was the cherished father of Angela Smerage Richter (Alex) and Rob Smerage (Wendy). His legacy will be carried on by his grandchildren, Marisa, Brandon and Justin Richter. He will be fondly remembered by his brother Rick Smerage (Pauline). Robert was predeceased by his parents, Robert Sr. and Bernice Smerage.

Robert enjoyed his lengthy career of 43 years with the Toronto Zoo, where he worked as an Animal Care Supervisor. During his years at the zoo he acquired many funny and fascinating experiences which he loved to share with others. His love for animals extending beyond work, as he enjoyed his daily walks with his dogs and taking them for car rides. He had a passion for music, as some of his favourite pastimes included playing his guitar and listening to music. Robert’s talents branched out to having a natural greenthumb when it came to gardening. He found delight in creating unique sculptures and works of art out of antlers and gifting them to family and friends. One of his favourite places to visit was Wasaga Beach.

Becoming a grandfather to Marisa, Brandon and Justin brought him pride and joy; even on bad days just a simple chat on the phone with the grandkids would bring a big grin to his face and make him feel at ease. Robert will be remembered the most for his love of his family.

In memory of Robert and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Toronto Zoo and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
