Richard Lazar, devoted husband, father, grandfather, sailor, and lifelong tech enthusiast, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, with his wife and daughter by his side and a beautiful view of his beloved Lake Ontario in the distance. He was 81.
Born with an inquisitive mind and a heart full of adventure, Richard found his calling in the early days of the computer industry in California—before it was called Silicon Valley—when floppy disks were floppy and “the cloud” still meant weather. Over a career that spanned more than four decades, he witnessed—and helped shape—the digital revolution. Whether writing code, leading engineering teams, or mentoring young developers, Richard brought integrity, curiosity, and a generous spirit to every project.
Yet for all his accomplishments in technology, Richard's truest joy came from life beyond the screen. An avid sailor and lover of any body of water, he built his dream life on the water with his beloved wife, Sharron. Together, they made a home that literally rocked with the waves—where dinner conversations included discussions of wind speed, lake levels, and the latest software updates. Richard’s floating home was a reflection of his unique blend of technical brilliance and adventurous soul. It was as much a testament to his ingenuity as it was to his love for the water. Aboard this home, he found peace, purpose, and the freedom he cherished to pursue all his beloved hobbies, whether it was wooden boat building, tending his community garden plot, or taking his motorcycle for a ride.
His greatest accomplishment was the family he and Sharron created. His commitment to his family was exceptional. Those lucky enough to be loved by him knew that whenever he was needed, he was there. There was never a time he wasn’t. From jumping into the car at 4:30 a.m. to help with the birth of his grandchild, to supporting Sharron as she pursued her academic dreams, to flying or driving countless hours to visit and stay in touch with family and friends far and wide—if someone needed him, he was there. To his very last breath, his only focus was the happiness of those around him and those he loved.
A deeply committed family man, Richard was never happier than when he was surrounded by loved ones—sharing stories, teaching his grandchildren how to do magic tricks or how to work a water balloon slingshot, and reminding everyone that life, much like sailing, is about adjusting your course with grace and humor.
He leaves behind Sharron, his wife of 55 years; his daughter, Michelle; son-in-law, Matthew; his grandchildren, Henry, Jack, and Isabel, whom he adored; his daughter, Emily; sons, Mark and Scott; his cherished dog, Kona; the family of his late brother David, sister-in-law Rhonda, nieces Nicole and Lauren, nephews Travis and Taylor; his brother-in-law Glenn and his wife Sue, nephews Kirk and Brett; longtime best friends Cheryl and John Wakelin; his family of loving neighbours, the Float Home Community; and a wide circle of friends and family who will miss his wisdom, warmth, and unwavering kindness.
Richard was given the best care possible in his last months. We are so thankful to the many nurses and PSWs at Chartwell Grenadier and Baycrest Apotex Long term Care. Specifically his companions Palden and Chenzin filled his last days with dancing, music, laughter and love.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 11 a.m. at The Dogfish Pub, where friends and family will gather to honor his memory, share stories, and raise a glass to a life well lived. In true Richard fashion, nautical attire is welcome.
Richard’s final voyage may have begun, but his legacy—of love, laughter, and the courage to live life on your own terms—will endure in every line of code, every gust of wind, and every heart he touched.
Fair winds, Richard. May your next chapter be written in the stars and cosmos.
